Fair Play for Girls in Sports
Recently, Fair Play for Girls in Sports, along with partners Coaching Corps and the California Park & Recreation Society, released a report finding that California park and recreation departments generally perceive that community youth sports are gender equitable, yet nearly half of the state's departments are not tracking participants' gender in programming, a key mechanism for ensuring gender equity. Nonetheless, park and recreation departments are open to receiving training so they may achieve gender equity under the law.

This report is the first-ever study examining the implementation of AB 2404, the 2004 California state law requiring gender equity in park and recreation-based community youth athletics. With such information, we can increase efforts to ensure girls are participating equally in local sports under the law, so they may enjoy a lifetime of benefits.

Service and workforce program aids city's at-risk youth
The Philadelphia Inquirer
Nadira Hampton has traded the pavement of drug corners for the grass and trees of Philadelphia's Pennypack Park. Hampton, 19, who has been in and out of jail for selling drugs for most of her teenage years, is part of a new service and workforce development program that Philadelphia officials announced. PowerCorpsPHL, under the Americorps umbrella, is geared at helping at-risk youths develop environmental work skills and find jobs in the field.
