Council to consider more funding for ‘Great Plates’ meals program, against backdrop of shrinking reserves Pasadena Now The Pasadena City Council recently faced a decision on whether to appropriate more than $905,000 to continue funding the pandemic-prompted “Great Plates Delivered” program, which provides three meals a day, prepared by local restaurants, to seniors who are at risk and unable to access meals during Safer at Home restrictions. The statewide program was launched by Gov. Gavin Newsom in April with the dual goal of helping seniors in need, as well as throwing desperately needed business to local restaurants crunched economically by the pandemic. READ MORE

Special permits will allow churches, youth sports to take place in city parks The Bakersfield Californian The city of Bakersfield will allow religious services, fitness classes and youth sports to temporarily take place in city parks under a new program similar to one that allows restaurants to expand dining onto sidewalks and parking lots due to COVID-19 restrictions on indoor seating. A special use permit offered through the Recreation and Parks Department is available at no-cost but groups must show that they are insured, said the department's director Dianne Hoover. An application is available online and takes five days to process. READ MORE

Reviewing employee safety, Santa Cruz city panel recommends change Santa Cruz Sentinel A city commission has forged a list of recommended policy changes designed to improve safety conditions for park and recreation employees. At the culmination of about seven months’ work by the panel’s subcommittee, the Parks and Recreation Commission unanimously voted Monday afternoon to forward a series of actionable steps spanning safety training and increased legal clarity to partnering with nonprofits and revising the Ranger Program to the Santa Cruz City Council.
