Attracting Next Gen Talent
FPSA
I saw a great piece last week about attracting Gen-Z to manufacturing jobs. I am particularly interested in this topic for two reasons.
On one hand, last year we launched our first FPSA Career Fair on the campus of the Illinois Institute of Technology, which I think all involved would agree it was a great learning experience, as well as setting up many young people for their first job coming out of college.

Cold chain continues to be hot
Dairy Foods
For the cold storage industry, there is good news to report. The visibility and need for the cold chain is increasing significantly, as it did throughout the pandemic. The public realizes it is dependent on a global cold chain and the world pays more attention to how food moves through the system. Consequently, the cold chain industry continues to grow domestically and globally, with a nearly 35% increase from 2021 to 2022, based on GCCA member capacity.
This growth is juxtaposed against a cold storage industry dealing with multiple disruptions. And the number one disruptor – strained global supply chains.

The benefits of rapid changeover in a food processing facility
Food Safety Magazine
In lean and process efficiency, rapid changeover is classified as SMED (Single-Minute Exchange of Die). In the food industry, there are many different "changeovers"—e.g., from production to sanitation back to production; from production to maintenance to sanitation; when changing equipment from processing one product to another product; and when moving from one allergen to another allergen. Changeovers can be time-consuming and add considerable waste.

Agro-informatics trends transforming the food industry in 2023
Food Manufacturing
Driving the food industry forward from the ground up, the agricultural industry looks much different today than it did hundreds of years ago. Mechanization changed agriculture’s reliance on human labor and horsepower. The Green Revolution harnessed selective breeding allowing more grain to be produced per acre, helping to feed the growing population and enabling food producers to create new products. Over the past few years, this change has continued, with an increasing focus on sustainability worldwide, driven by consumer demands and changing production policies to support this. A large part of this is driven in the agricultural industry, where sustainability improvements are fed throughout the production chain.

Automating pie production can increase capacity, reduce waste
Baking Business
Many pie makers are looking for not only versatility but also the ability to increase production as needed.
“We see more and more demand for equipment that can handle production in a more flexible way,” said Sonia Bal, director of global marketing, Unifiller Systems Inc. “For producers who specialize in pie production alone, it’s about the ability of the depositor to handle multiple SKUs and varieties, perhaps with the addition of different heads or attachments or with dialed-in recipes via servo models. With producers who offer pies in addition to other product lines, it’s about the versatility of the equipment. Can a pie depositor be quickly switched over to handle cake batters, for example?”
