Special Welcome Message from Scott Burns
IAEG
Welcome to the 338th IAEG Connector, the electronic newsletter connecting environmental and engineering geologists around the world!
This is the last IAEG Connector for 2024 with news from our organization. Because of holidays in the United States where our newsletter is produced, our organization that produces the Connector gives a holiday to their workers. Next week's Connector will have downloaded the most interesting articles number 11-20, and the Jan. 1 issue will have articles 1-10 from this year. We will be back to normal on Jan. 8th!
This issue has an excellent YEG article from Ethiopia! We also announce an interesting symposium in New Zealand in 2025. We also have an article on geoscience awareness from Nigeria
Lots of geodisasters have happened around the world this week! We had a 7.0 Magnitude earthquake on the California coast in North America. It was also International Soil Day last week, a volcano erupted in the Philippines, and there was a tunnel collapse in India.
Enjoy!

Winners of the 2024 Richard Wolters Award are announced at the 4th European Regional Conference of IAEG
The Richard Wolters Prize Jury has finally decided to award the RWP winner to Dr. Weiwei Zhu nominated by Chinese National Group, and RWP runners-up awarded to Dr. Stratis Karantanellis nominated by Greece National Group and Cheng-Han Lin nominated by Chinese Taipei Regional Group. We will try to get photos of the winner and runners up for a future IAEG Connector Issue. Congratulations to the these three. The RWP winner Dr. Weiwei Zhu delivered the 2024 RWP Lecture at the closing ceremony of 4th European Regional Conference, the video could be viewed here: 2024 RWP Lecture.

Landslide Geo-education and Risk (LaGER) to be held in New Zealand in 2025
In October this year the New Zealand Geotechnical Society (NZGS) was delighted to receive the support of Joint Technical Committees 1 and 3 to host a shared workshop in late April 2025.
Our theme "Landslide Geo-Education and Risk" brings together the full lifecycle of landslide risk management. It encompasses the need to educate the next generation of landslide risk managers, the need to robustly understand landslide risk, and the need to communicate that risk to the public and decision-makers so that real change is implemented. We believe that bringing together JTC1 and JTC3 to work together on landslide risk assessment, education, communication and outreach is a great opportunity to create real change. More will be coming from this group soon.

4th African Regional IAEG Congress
Sept. 8-12, 2025
The unpredictable and catastrophic geohazards associated with climate change have particularly negative impacts in developing countries and on poor communities. The importance of Engineering Geology to reduce negative impacts and create safe living environments will be highlighted during this congress. The need for safe and responsible mining of strategic minerals essential for the transition to viable green energy alternatives, will also be emphasized. Read More

Forming a national group
IAEG
The organization of the International Association for Engineering Geology and the Environment is generally conducted through National Groups, although individual membership is also permitted. Associate membership is encouraged and wherever possible associate members will form part of a National Group. Groups of engineering geologists wishing to form a National Group should contact the Secretary General who will assist them in preparing their application for consideration by the Executive Committee and Council. Submit a photo of engineering geology in action to the IAEG Connector
IAEG
The executive committee of IAEG at our recent meeting in Athens suggested we need to have a good photo at the beginning of every IAEG Connector about engineering geology. We have to be careful about publishing photos because of copyright laws. So, we are asking our members to submit photos that they will allow us to use in our newsletter. The photos will show the diversity of what we do! They can be photos of something geological or engineering geologists working on some project. The photographer will get credit for the photo in the newsletter.
If you would like to submit a photo for us to review, send it to Scott Burns, Editor.
