Lawmakers in both parties to launch new push on Violence Against Women Act
The Hill
A bipartisan group of lawmakers will press in 2022 for a renewal of the Violence Against Women Act for the first time in nearly a decade following a rise in domestic violence cases during the pandemic.
Sen. Lisa Murkowksi, who announced a bipartisan deal on a framework for the VAWA reauthorization earlier this month with Sens. Dianne Feinstein, Joni Ernst and Dick Durbin, said lawmakers hope to introduce the legislation in the next few weeks.

VA strengthens care for veterans impacted by intimate partner violence and sexual assault
VAntage Point
VA recently initiated a pilot program to improve services for veterans who have experienced or are experiencing intimate partner violence or sexual assault.
The two-year initiative focuses on strengthening community partnerships, training for VA staff and community partners, identifying effective clinical interventions and providing outreach to underserved populations.

Scientists seek connection between toxin-causing bacterium and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome

Sudden unexpected infant death, including Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, results in about 3,400 deaths each year in the United States, but despite decades of research the root cause of the SIDS disease remains unknown. Researchers at Rockefeller University in New York have explored the hypothesis that SIDS may be triggered by environmental exposure to Clostridium perfringens enterotoxin. The toxin can cause gastrointestinal disease, most commonly food poisoning.

Child abuse increases risk of suicidal behavior in adolescents

A new study published in the Journal of Clinical Medicine reveals child abuse increase some determining risk factors in adolescents’ suicidal behaviors.
The research found that people who suffered child abuse are more likely to show personality traits that are related to intense anger, impulsivity, and emotional dysregulation. They also tend to undergo more stressful situations in their life. These new stressors and emotional dysregulation would be the factors that could lead to suicidal behaviors in adolescents.

Study finds high mortality rates of youths previously incarcerated in the juvenile legal system

New research from the Abigail Wexner Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s Hospital finds that youth aged 11 to 21 years, who have been previously incarcerated in the juvenile legal system, are 5.9 times more likely than the general population to experience early mortality. The report, which describes a cohort study of 3,645 previously incarcerated youths in Ohio’s juvenile legal system, appears in JAMA Network Open.

Idaho State Police: Backlog of rape test kits cleared

Testing of a backlog of 1,100 rape kits first identified in a 2016 audit has been completed, Idaho State Police said.
The agency in a news release Dec. 29 said reports on the test results have been provided to investigators and prosecutors. The agency also said any hits in the National DNA Index System have been provided to local law enforcement.

Newly discovered 'brain tsunamis' provide scientific insight into biology of death

A 2018 study may lend credence to what happens during the biological and irreversible death of the brain organ.
Published in the Annals of Neurology, the study inspected spreading depolarization of the human cerebral cortex and provided a better understanding of how the brain responds to energy depletion. Also for the first time, it showed the full electrophysiological signature of dying in the wake of circulatory arrest in the human brain.
