New research from North Carolina State University and the University of South Florida finds significant flaws in recently released forensic software designed to assess the age of individuals based on their skeletal remains. The researchers report that, on average, the software's age estimates are off by more than 14 years.
"Estimating someone's age at death, based on skeletal remains, helps to build a biological profile of the deceased," says Ann Ross, a professor of biological sciences at NC State and co-author of a paper on the work. "That's important information for identifying unidentified remains, and can also be important in law enforcement contexts."

When it comes to sexual violence, Kenya and the Democratic Republic of Congo are among the most dangerous places in the world. In Kenya, fourteen percent of women and six percent of men aged 15-49 report having experienced sexual violence at least once in their lifetime (the percentage goes up to 45 and 44 percent respectively, if generic 'physical violence' is considered).
The Democratic Republic of the Congo, which has notoriously been described as the “rape capital of the world", fares even worse: the United Nations estimates that around 200,000 Congolese women have been raped in the 1998-2013 period.

Thousands of requests by men to bring in child and adolescent brides to live in the United States were approved over the past decade, according to government data obtained by The Associated Press. In one case, a 49-year-old man applied for admission for a 15-year-old girl.
The approvals are legal: The Immigration and Nationality Act does not set minimum age requirements. And in weighing petitions for spouses or fiancees, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services goes by whether the marriage is legal in the home country and then whether the marriage would be legal in the state where the petitioner lives.
But the data raises questions about whether the immigration system may be enabling forced marriage and about how U.S. laws may be compounding the problem despite efforts to limit child and forced marriage.

Brooklyn-based artist Aliza Shvarts began collecting rape kits — formally called sexual assault evidence collection kits — from each American state more than a year ago as part of an art and research project that compares their physical and linguistic differences. The striking result, titled Anthem, is currently on view at Long Island City’s SculptureCenter as part of a group exhibition called “In Practice: Other Objects,” where the installation, which consists of 50 different cardboard box or envelope kits in various sizes and shapes, guides viewers through the process of how evidence is collected after a sexual assault.

When Laura woke up on June 1, 2014, she knew she had been raped. What she didn't know is what, exactly, she wanted to do about it. But thanks to a program in Calgary, Laura was able to delay her decision to have police pursue an investigation until she was emotionally prepared for the aftermath.
This month, four and a half years after the attack, former University of Toronto medical student Prachur Shrivastava was found guilty of sexual assault and will be sentenced in the new year.
