In 2015, 5,545 children in San Francisco, California, were reported to have experienced abuse. Of those, the reports of 753 children were substantiated. The expense to San Francisco for not preventing that abuse will cost $400,533 per child over his or her lifetime. That adds up to $301.6 million for just that one year, according to “The Economics of Child Abuse: A Study of San Francisco.”

A single image can trigger a vast international investigation into child sexual abuse online.
That was what happened in 2012 when a U.S. man sent a photo to an undercover agent in Boston, who then uploaded it to Interpol’s International Child Sexual Exploitation image database (ICSE). It was picked up by an investigator in the Netherlands who identified a stuffed toy in the image as Miffy, a rabbit given to many Dutch children.

Finding the most effective ways to prevent and respond to sexual assault is a high priority for OVW. Thus we funded a multi-year, six-site project that delved deeply and systematically into the outreach, services and community partnerships of organizations that identified as dual programs that serve victims of both domestic and sexual violence and multi-service programs that include services to sexual assault survivors.

Human trafficking has been defined as the recruitment, transportation, transfer, harboring, or receipt of adults and children by improper means (such as force, abduction, fraud, or coercion) for an improper purpose including forced labor or sexual exploitation.
Although human trafficking affects every demographic, a common factor across all forms of modern slavery is the victims’ vulnerability to exploitation due to systemic social, cultural, and economic policies that marginalize or discriminate against individuals.

of Justice (DOJ). Created in 1995, OVW implements the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA)
and subsequent legislation and provides national leadership on issues of sexual assault,
domestic violence, dating violence, and stalking. Since its inception, OVW has supported a
multifaceted approach to responding to these crimes through implementation of grant programs
authorized by VAWA.
