.FORENSIC NURSES UPDATES
AEquitas announces a new resource! Self-Collected Sexual Assault Kits: Assessing and Mitigating the Risks
This article focuses on self-collected sexual assault kits – sometimes known as "do-it-yourself" or "DIY" kits – that are self-administered post-assault and involve the collection and preservation of evidence from the body in a non-medical setting. It examines the rationale behind self-collected kits for victims of sexual violence who state that they want to address their trauma outside the healthcare and criminal justice systems; the challenges self-collected kits present for prosecutors; and the limitations of self-collected kits to provide critical victim care, treatment, and support traditionally provided through the sexual assault medical forensic exam (SAMFE) process. Over one-third of young adult US men involved in technology-related abuse, study finds
M Health Lab
In 2022, technology has the potential to both start relationships and keep them alive, even those crossing continents. Lifting a finger, literally, can land someone “face-to-face” with their partner or spouse.
This increased accessibility – 81 percent of Americans own a smart phone and 75 percent own a computer – also allows for more unhealthy behaviors in relationships. Insults, harassment, nonstop messages about a partner’s whereabouts and accessing online accounts without permission can all be easily facilitated through technology.
A new study shows that one-quarter of young American men experience this technology-facilitated abuse – both by delivering and receiving it.

Young sexual minority men and transgender women are at higher risk of transactional sex
Johns Hopkins Medicine
About a fifth of young sexual minority males and transgender females are estimated to be engaging in transactional, or survival sex, according to results of a new survey study by Johns Hopkins Medicine researchers. The findings, which define the practice as trading sex for money, housing and other necessities, were published in the February 2022 issue of the Journal of Adolescent Health and first appeared online Jan. 16. The findings affirm that transactional sex may place young Black and Latinx gay or bisexual males and transgender females at risk for exposure to HIV.

Biden administration releases new transgender federal prison policy
Government Executive
The Biden administration has restored guidelines requiring federal prisons to consider the safety of transgender people when deciding where to house them, a policy the Trump administration rescinded in 2018.
The Bureau of Prisons has reissued its Transgender Offender Manual, which once again includes the Obama-era policy, Kristie Breshears, chief of public affairs for the agency, confirmed in a statement to The 19th. Under Trump, transgender people in federal prisons were housed based on sex assigned at birth alone. Biden’s policy builds off the Obama-era guidance and goes a step further, requiring prison staff to use a transgender person’s lived name and pronouns.

Study finds blunted cortisol profiles in women who experienced childhood sexual abuse
News-Medical
Childhood sexual abuse can lead to depression, anxiety, cardiovascular disease and other health problems later in life. Not all abused children experience these problems, however, and researchers are working to understand whose health is affected and why.
In a new article in the journal Psychoneuroendocrinology, a team of researchers led by faculty in Penn State's College of Health and Human Development examined how the production of the stress hormone cortisol differs from childhood to middle age for some women who experienced childhood sexual abuse.

Study identifies new way to attack herpesviruses
American Society for Microbiology
A new study published this week in mBio, an open access journal of the American Society for Microbiology, has opened the door to a new approach to attacking herpesviruses. The study demonstrated that targeting two metal ion-dependent enzymes of human herpesviruses with two compounds, AK-157 and AK-166, can inhibit the replication of the virus. The finding provides new opportunities to developing agents against herpesviruses.

Post-mortem interval of human skeletal remains accurately determined by means of non-destructive techniques
Science Magazine
In the field of forensic analysis there is a significant demand for objectively determining the post-mortem interval when human skeletal remains are discovered. So far, a whole range of techniques have been used to establish the approximate time that has elapsed since the death of the individual, but they have significant drawbacks in terms of reliability and accuracy: they provide an approximate interval but not an exact date; they are relatively invasive techniques, which require staining or removal of a part of the bone, etc.
“The aim of this research was precisely to come up with a method capable of determining the relatively accurate post-mortem interval in human remains by using non-destructive measurements,” said Luis Bartolomé, technician in the UPV/EHU’s SGIker Central Analysis Service.
