IAFN is, once again, collaborating with the American Nurses Foundation (ANF) to offer a $10,000 research grant to a forensic nurse researcher. The focus of this grant is restricted to research focused on forensic nursing science.
This award is part of the 2018 Nursing Research Grants which offers nursing research awards to beginner and experienced nurse researchers. Information about all of the awards is available here.
The online application is available now. All applications must be completed by 11:59 p.m. on May 1.
Preference will be given to applicants who are members of the International Association of Forensic Nurses. If there are no member applications, or no high-quality proposals from association members, non-member applicants will be considered, with the selected grantee required to become a member of IAFN in order to receive funding.

Believe all women. That's been the rallying cry of the #MeToo movement. It's been embraced by some but viewed by others as just too naive. Christian Miller explore this tension in their new book "A False Report: A True Story Of Rape In America."

Former Vice President Joe Biden will be in Indianapolis Friday to kick off a three-day conversation with fraternity and sorority leaders from across the country about ending sexual assault on college campuses.
Biden has emphasized the importance of combating campus sexual assault since helping found the It's On Us campaign to challenge college campuses to step up and make a pledge to end sexual violence on campus. He famously wrote a moving letter to the survivor of a high-profile sexual assault on the Stanford campus in 2016.

The study included in-depth interviews with people who knew of, experienced or were threatened with forced marriage, in-depth informational calls with stakeholders, and an online Google survey.
Stakeholders relayed difficulty in identifying and providing support to victims of forced marriage, typically identifying forced marriage only after disclosures of abuse and/or depression. Future research should consider challenges in obtaining an adequate sample.

Many people want to understand these behaviors and work to prevent them. It helps if we are consistent and as precise as possible when we use these terms.
But what does each term mean?

In Massachusetts, there are no laws that require law enforcement agencies to count, track or test rape kits.
That leaves the potential for DNA evidence — which could lead to convictions or the identification of serial rapists — sitting in a backlog.
Advocacy groups have been working nationwide to identify just how many rape kits are sitting untested on crime lab shelves and meeting with legislators to help pass laws that will ensure rape kits are tested promptly and tracked.

People who regularly work with sexual assault victims have long recognized that victims are often re-traumatized when they come to emergency rooms for medical care and evidence collection.
Victims have not only had to endure long waits and road trips to be examined, but those performing the exams often lack the advanced training in working with sexual assault victims and evidence gathering protocol.

If you had the misfortune to be sexually assaulted in Gasconade County, a rural area of mid-Missouri, the Hermann Area District Hospital might be the first place you would go for medical attention and an examination to gather evidence.
But there are no trained forensic examiners at Hermann Area District Hospital. If you don't want to transfer to another hospital, they'll still collect the evidence — fingernail scrapings, blood samples, hair and internal cavity swabs — that can help link a perpetrator to a crime.
