IAFN is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.
IAFN is once again collaborating with the American Nurses Foundation (ANF) to offer a $10,000 research grant to a forensic nurse researcher. Preference will be given to applicants who are members of the International Association of Forensic Nurses. If there are no member applications, or no high-quality proposals from association members, non-member applicants will be considered, with the selected grantee required to become a member of IAFN in order to receive funding. The focus of this grant is restricted to research focused on forensic nursing science.
This award is part of the 2018 Nursing Research Grants which offers nursing research awards to beginner and experienced nurse researchers. Information about all of the awards is available here.

Maryland lawmakers approved a bill that lets rape victims impregnated during an attack ask a judge to end their assailants' parental rights.
The Rape Survivor Family Protection Act unanimously passed both chambers of the General Assembly last week. It allows a victim to ask a court to terminate a rapist's parental rights, even if the attacker hasn't been convicted of the crime, as long as there's "clear and convincing evidence" of guilt.

“Breaking the Silence on Sexual Violence: Media Literacy and Sexual Violence Law,” was the title of the seminar led by members from the St. Francis Community Center Counseling Services.

In responding to a Medscape poll asking whether they had been sexually harassed by a patient, many more nurses (71 percent) than physicians (47 percent) said yes. The poll questions were posed December 20 by Medscape Medical News. Responses totaled 1045 and included 569 nurses, 408 physicians, and 68 other healthcare providers (HCPs).

Lutheran Community Services Northwest received a grant a hire a special nurse to collect evidence after a sexual assault.
Director of Victim Advocacy and Education at Lutheran Community Services Erin Williams-Hueter said they received a $157,000 grant from the Washington State Office of Crime Victims Advocacy. The grant will give them an opportunity to hire a sexual assault nurse examiner or SANE. This person would have special expertise in collecting evidence after a sexual assault. This specialized nurse would be available to all hospitals in the Spokane County.
