First report on mass shootings from Columbia University database

A research team at the Center of Prevention and Evaluation at Columbia University Irving Medical Center and the New York State Psychiatric Institute, led by Drs. Gary Brucato and Ragy R. Girgis, found that, contrary to popular belief, serious mental illness was present in only 11 percent of all mass murderers and in only eight percent of mass shooters.
The study — the first published report on mass shootings from the Columbia Mass Murder Database — appeared online Feb. 17th in Psychological Medicine.

FSU research study addresses effects of client violence on child protection workers

Florida State University College of Social Work researchers have found a link between work-related violence and poor health outcomes for child protection workers.
The new study, recently published online by the Journal for the Society of Social Work and Research, focused on the events that occur after a child protection worker has experienced violence perpetrated by a client. Researchers found that workers who were not adequately supported by employers after such an event experienced high levels of psychological distress.

Police officers with higher activity in the anterior frontal brain area appear to respond more resiliently to a traumatic event. Brain researchers from the Donders Institute and the Behavioural Science Institute discovered this in collaboration with the Police Academy.

Exposure to violence in adolescence linked to intimate partner violence, mental distress later in life

People who experienced violence as children at home and in their community are at higher risk for violence with their partners later in life, new research shows.
Four separate studies recently published by the University of Michigan’s School of Public Health look at intimate partner violence from different perspectives with two focusing on adolescent populations and two on adult populations.
