Day One (Leadership Day) will help forensic nurses develop their voices to better communicate to legislators, funders and other supporters the work we do and our impact on patients and communities. Earn up to 6 contact hours. All experience levels are welcome.
Day Two (Lobby Day) we take to the Hill, using the skills developed on day one to talk with legislators and their staff about the issues important to forensic nurses and the patients for whom we care. No prior lobbying experience is needed. Not sure you feel comfortable lobbying solo? We can pair you with a more experienced colleague to mentor you in the process.

IAFN is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.
The Board of Directors of the International Association of Forensic Nurses announces that due to other commitments, Stacy Coleman has resigned her position as Board Treasurer effective Feb. 16, 2017. Ms. Coleman will remain on as a member of the Finance Committee. IAFN extends its gratitude to Stacy and her willingness to continue to serve as a volunteer to support the financial health of the association.
Gail Hornor, currently a Director-At-Large, has been appointed by the Board to fill the Treasurer vacancy. The Board has appointed Shalotta Sharp to fill the empty Director-At-Large seat vacated by Gail. Ms. Sharp has substantial experience in both volunteer and consultant capacities with IAFN. Read More.

The Maryland State Senate this week unanimously approved two bills that would alter Maryland’s rape law, setting statewide standards for retaining sexual assault evidence and modifying the language that defines a sexual assault.
If passed by the House of Delegates, which held hearings on the bills would prohibit the destruction of sexual assault evidence within 20 years of the alleged act and modify Maryland’s rape law to specify that physical resistance is not necessary to reach a conviction.

Despite marital rape being illegal in most cases across most of the U.S., the Ohio Revised Code allows for several gaps where a spouse may not be charged with rape in the event of what otherwise seems exactly like rape. In Ohio, there must be some “force or threat of force” in order to warrant prosecution. The codified exemptions remain a legal problem for those fighting against domestic and sexual abuse.
