House passes bill to renew Violence Against Women Act
The Hill
The House passed legislation on March 17 to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act, a law originally authored by President Biden that lapsed in 2019.
Lawmakers voted largely along party lines 244-172 to approve the measure, with only 29 Republicans joining all Democrats in support.

Policy outlines how pediatricians can improve care of AI/AN youths

American Indian/Alaska Native children and adolescents are a unique and diverse population with multiple health inequities, and pediatricians are in a special position to improve their health and well-being with culturally sensitive care.
A new AAP policy statement examines health inequities and barriers to treatment for this population, with recommendations for care and opportunities for advocacy. When implementing the strategies in the policy, pediatricians are encouraged to seek programs and interventions that incorporate AI/AN culture, tradition and practices.

Survey shows consistent pattern of discrimination, neglect, abuse of First Nation people in health care

A new report on experiences of systemic racism in Manitoba’s health care system was released based on findings from the Southern Chiefs’ Organization’s Survey on Racism in Health Care.
The survey consisted of nine closed-ended and two open-ended questions and was shared online for six weeks in December 2020.
Three hundred and ninety-seven citizens from 34 First Nation communities participated in the survey, and results showed a consistent pattern of discrimination, neglect, and abuse.

Reports of sexual violations against children double in PEI

There's been a jump in the number of police reports of sexual violations against children in Canada, including in P.E.I., which has seen an increase of 177 percent between 2014 and 2019.
The number of reports to police on P.E.I. rose from 18 to 50 between those years — that includes adults reporting abuse as children. Nationally reports have increased from 4,534 to 10,038 in the same time frame — a jump of 121 percent.

Turkey withdraws from treaty preventing violence against women

Turkey has withdrawn from a Council of Europe treaty on preventing violence against women but did not provide a reason, according to Reuters. The treaty was created to help prevent, prosecute and eliminate violence against women and domestic violence while promoting gender equality.

Nearly two-thirds of middle-aged and older adults in Canada report adverse childhood experiences
New research from McMaster University has found that roughly three in every five Canadian adults aged 45 to 85 have been exposed to childhood abuse, neglect, intimate partner violence or other household adversity.
The research, which estimates the prevalence of a broad range of adverse childhood experiences, was published in CMAJ Open.

Researchers explore forensic anthropology's current knowledge with transgendender bodies

While transgender and gender-diverse individuals have historically been disproportionately susceptible to violence and homicides, the recent rise in visibility of ongoing trans-focused violence has highlighted how the medical-legal community, in general and forensic anthropology, in particular, have largely neglected trans and gender-diverse people.
This is exemplified by a new study that found nearly 30 percent of forensic anthropologists surveyed had participated in a case involving a transgender individual, yet the vast majority were unfamiliar with gender-affirming surgeries.

More evidence of sexual violence being used as a deliberate weapon of war is emerging from Ethiopia's northern Tigray region, where an armed conflict has been raging for months.
Women are being gang-raped, drugged and held hostage, according to medical records and testimonies from survivors shared with CNN. In one case a woman's vagina was stuffed with stones, nails and plastic, according to a video seen by CNN and testimony from one of the doctors who treated her.

New antibiotic clears multi-drug resistant gonorrhea in mice in single dose

A new antibiotic compound clears infection of multi-drug resistant gonorrhea in mice in a single oral dose, according to a new study led by researchers at Penn State and Emory University. The compound targets a molecular pathway found in bacteria but not humans and could lead to new treatments for gonorrhea and infections from other bacteria, such as tuberculosis and MRSA.
