Most nurses today would quickly agree there is an epidemic of overuse and abuse of prescription pain medication. The public is also beginning to see the effects of liberal prescriptive practices. With more than 28,000 deaths in 2014 linked to opioid overdoses, it's obvious these medications are not "safe" simply because there are prescribed. The magnitude of the problem is clear. However, most nurses often feel helpless, as if they can make little impact.
