Deadline for submission: May 7
Have you developed a new forensic nursing project?
Do you have research in progress?
Do you want to share your ideas with colleagues?
Poster sessions allow presenters to network with peers one-on-one, exchanging ideas and learning from one another outside the traditional conference sessions. We also encourage students at all levels (BSN/MSN/DNP/PhD) to submit poster presentations. This is a great way to share your ideas, present early stage doctoral work, and get feedback from scholars and clinicians.
Submissions must be completed by May 7, 2018
IAFN is once again collaborating with the American Nurses Foundation (ANF) to offer a $10,000 research grant to a forensic nurse researcher. Preference will be given to applicants who are members of the International Association of Forensic Nurses. If there are no member applications, or no high-quality proposals from association members, non-member applicants will be considered, with the selected grantee required to become a member of IAFN in order to receive funding. The focus of this grant is restricted to research focused on forensic nursing science.
This award is part of the 2018 Nursing Research Grants which offers nursing research awards to beginner and experienced nurse researchers. Information about all of the awards is available here.
The online application is available now. All applications must be completed by 11:59 p.m. on May 1.

Attorney General Lisa Madigan called on legislators to require that state hospitals have a trained medical provider available to treat sexual assault patients.
“After years of unwillingness and delay, this bill, if it becomes law, will finally require Illinois hospitals to do what they should have been doing all along,” she said. “I think it should be a moral obligation, but because it hasn’t worked that way, we’ll make it a legal obligation.”

Lake County Prosecutor Bernard Carter, the Fair Haven rape crisis center, the county's Sexual Assault Response Team and others announced a series of reforms aimed at ending the local backlog of untested rape kits.
The policy changes were sparked by the results released in December of a state survey of law enforcement agencies and health care providers that found 2,560 completed sexual assault examination kits — that potentially could be used at a criminal trial — were never submitted for laboratory testing.

Patient non-adherence can come in many forms: unwillingness to follow a course of therapy, repeated missed appointments, rejecting treatment recommendations, reluctance to take medications, refusal to provide information or chronic late payments. If left unchecked, such conduct may result in litigation. The objective of this presentation is to empower nurses with strategies to not only recognize these patient behaviors but also take steps to reduce the likelihood of malpractice claims. Using selected claim scenarios, RNs and LPNs/LVNs can examine their own current risk control practices in relation to the claims and losses experienced by their peers.
