Thank you to all who joined us for IAFN’s annual Leadership and Lobby Days in Washington, D.C. last week! Close to 50 forensic nurses from the United States and Canada participated in the two-day event. Suzanne Miyamoto, PhD, RN, FAAN led our Leadership Day with education and an interactive workshop designed to enhance leadership impact and amplify the work and value of forensic nurses. The afternoon consisted of a legislative briefing and prep for Hill visits by IAFN’s lobbyist Patrick Cooney, President of The Federal Group. Day Two started off with a breakfast briefing in the Capitol Visitor Center and then our nurses took to the Hill to meet with legislators in an effort to provide education on forensic nursing issues and seek support for specific bills and legislative initiatives impacting our work. Participants had a positive experience, noting that both days contributed to feelings of personal and professional empowerment. More information about IAFN’s Legislative Agenda and Current Issue Briefs is available on our Government Affairs page.

You still have time nominate your Forensic Nursing hero, mentor, or colleague for an IAFN Award! The deadline has been extended to April 30, 2018. Honorees will be recognized during the 2018 International Conference on Forensic Nursing Science and Practice in Reno, Nevada, Oct. 24-27, 2018.
- Have you developed a new forensic nursing project?
- Do you have research in progress?
- Do you want to share your ideas with colleagues?
Poster sessions allow presenters to network with peers one-on-one, exchanging ideas and learning from one another outside the traditional conference sessions. We also encourage students at all levels (BSN/MSN/DNP/PhD) to submit poster presentations. This is a great way to share your ideas, present early stage doctoral work, and get feedback from scholars and clinicians.
Submissions are due May 7, 2018

It has been documented that 1 in 3 women will experience rape in her lifetime, and this is most common in women under the age of 25. Over 95 percent of victims of sexual assault are women worldwide, while in North America estimates place that at 85 percent. These are the assaults we know about — generous estimates say that, at most, 10 percent of rapes are reported to police or other authorities/health care providers.

At first, it had seemed to Shiori Ito like a dream opportunity.
As an aspiring young reporter, she says a prominent journalist had taken an interest in her career, and invited her out to dinner.
The invitation was made while they were both in the U.S., but it wasn't until they had both returned to Tokyo that the meeting took place. According to Ito, they went for sushi, and at some point in the evening she went to the bathroom. It would be the last thing she remembered from the restaurant.
