The Wall Street Journal
State and federal lawmakers are crafting legislation that would prohibit police from using DNA of sexual-assault victims in investigations unrelated to their attacks.

Rape has reportedly become a weapon in Ukraine. Finding justice may be difficult
NPR
The number of reports that have emerged since the start of the war in late February suggests that rape in Ukraine at the hands of Russian soldiers may be widespread. Those fears were further crystallized earlier this month following the Russian withdrawal from Bucha, a suburb of the capital Kyiv, where some two dozen women and girls were "systematically raped" by Russian forces, according to Ukraine's ombudswoman for human rights, Lyudmyla Denisova.

Healing historical trauma
Hopkins Bloomberg Public Health
In 2007, Canada took steps to confront the inhumane treatment at Indian residential schools, including a government apology, financial settlements for residential school survivors, and a Truth and Reconciliation Commission that took testimony from survivors and their families and created a national research center. Still, revelations of horrors at the boarding schools continue. Last year, ground penetrating radar identified more than 1,300 unmarked graves at four former Indian residential schools in Canada.

An algorithm that screens for child neglect raises concerns
Associated Press
Inside a cavernous stone fortress in downtown Pittsburgh, attorney Robin Frank defends parents at one of their lowest points – when they risk losing their children.
The job is never easy, but in the past she knew what she was up against when squaring off against child protective services in family court. Now, she worries she’s fighting something she can’t see: an opaque algorithm whose statistical calculations help social workers decide which families should be investigated in the first place.

New study finds childhood abuse linked to higher risk for high cholesterol as an adult
American Heart Association via ScienceDaily
The likelihood of developing high cholesterol – a risk factor for heart disease and stroke – was higher among white men and white women who experienced abuse during childhood, according to a study of more than 5,000 Black and white adults in the U.S. In contrast, growing up in a well-managed household with family members who were involved and engaged in the child's life offset the higher risk of high cholesterol among white women and Black men who reported abuse during childhood.

Meet the team of women taking on New York City's cold cases
NBC News
A young man wearing a T-shirt with a raven design and a backpack holding a “Watchmen” graphic novel and art supplies was found dead behind a residential building in Brooklyn, New York, over six years ago. Forensic officials estimated that he was 18 to 30 years old.
Medical examiners say they still don't know who he is.
“We don’t know very much about him, but I know he was reading that comic,” said Aden Naka, deputy director of forensic investigations. “I think about him all the time.”
Cases like this motivate Naka and the two other women on the cold case squad in New York City's chief medical examiner's office: Shivonne Hutson, executive director of forensic investigations, and Dr. Angela Soler, assistant director of forensic anthropology.
