public health
problem due to its high prevalence,

physical and mental health, and
persistent nature.
Work is needed on

developmental precursors to
IPV
and
the
pathways by
which early risk
increases susceptibility to IPV
in order
to
develop targeted, timely, and effective
interventions.

Future's Without Violence
Survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault need a range of health and mental health services, including preventive care, to heal and thrive. Today, affordable and comprehensive care is guaranteed, including for survivors through the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Importantly, the Affordable Care Act is still current law and survivors should be encouraged to get care and know they can sign up for health care at any time as can Medicaid enrollees.

Rape
is an important public safety threat and defined as any completed or attempted,
unwanted vaginal, oral, and/or anal penetration, committed by the use of force, threat of force,
coercion, or victim incapacitation. More than 20 percent of women and 1.6 percent of men during their
lifetime experience a completed or attempted rape and more than half a million women (slightly
over 1 percent) experience rape in a given year.

As a detective in the Orange County Sheriff’s Office sex crimes unit, Zeva Edmondson remembers taking a sexual assault victim home wrapped only in a hospital bed sheet after nurses and doctors took her clothes as evidence. Now, as the director of the Volusia Rape Crisis Center, Edmondson and other community partners are trying to make the process of reporting a rape and receiving help less stressful for sex abuse victims in Volusia County.

In 2008, the Journal of Emergency Medicine studied domestic violence cases where women were strangled nonfatally by their partners, and the results were chilling.
They found they were much more likely to be killed later by their partners, by as much as seven times. Researchers also found 43 percent of women who were ultimately murdered by their partners had been choked in the years prior to their death.
