Brigham and Women's Hospital via EurekAlert!
Violence is the third leading cause of death in the U.S. and preventing assault-related injuries is a priority in public health and clinical medicine. A study led by investigators at the Brigham examined variations in month and day of the week of injuries that led to Emergency Department visits nationally. Vital signs: Changes in firearm homicide and suicide rates – United States, 2019-2020
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
Firearm homicides and suicides represent important public health concerns in the United States, with substantial inequities by race and ethnicity and poverty level. In 2020, coincident with the COVID-19 pandemic, the firearm homicide rate increased nearly 35 percent, reaching its highest level since 1994, with disparities by race and ethnicity and poverty level widening. The firearm suicide rate, although higher than that for firearm homicide, remained nearly level overall but increased among some populations. Communities can implement comprehensive violence prevention strategies to address physical, social, and structural conditions that contribute to violence and disparities.

More than 90% of healthcare workers have experienced violence
Health Exec
A whopping 92 percent of healthcare workers say they’ve experienced or been close to violence on the job.
That’s according to a new survey from Perceptyx, which noted the violence came from a patient or a patient’s caregiver in the past month for nine in 10 survey respondents. Another three in four respondents have encountered both verbal and physical assaults in the month, and nearly half of workers called for security or another coworker to assist.

The bias hunter
Science
In February 2021, cognitive psychologist Itiel Dror set off a firestorm in the forensics community. In a paper, he suggested forensic pathologists were more likely to pronounce a child’s death a murder versus an accident if the victim was Black and brought to the hospital by the mother’s boyfriend than if they were white and brought in by the grandmother. It was the latest of Dror’s many experiments suggesting forensic scientists are subconsciously influenced by cognitive biases—biases that can put innocent people in jail.

Multidisciplinary team works to reduce preventable deaths of older adults
National Institute of Justice
Elder abuse and neglect are serious yet preventable problems in the United States. Approximately five million Americans are estimated to be victims of elder abuse and neglect each year, and just one in 24 cases are reported to authorities. The Harris County (Texas) Elder Fatality Review Team was formed in 2003 with a grant from the American Bar Association. EFFORT aims to identify and provide recommendations to prevent premature elderly deaths caused by elder abuse or neglect in our county. The team also examines and makes recommendations on preventable deaths of individuals with disabilities of all ages who could be victims of abuse and/or neglect.

Underwear that guards against STDs during oral sex? FDA says yes
HealthDay News via U.S. News & World Report
The first underwear meant to protect against sexually transmitted infections during oral sex was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on May 12. Lorals – which are available as bikinis or shorties – are made of vanilla-flavored latex about as thin as condom material and form a seal on the inside of the thigh to keep fluids in, developer Melanie Cristol told the New York Times. They are to be used only once, like a condom.
