Recognizing intimate partner violence injuries on imaging before they escalate
HealthImaging
A recent analysis of victims who were hospitalized after enduring intimate partner violence seeks to improve the identification and reporting of injuries these patients sustain.
The study centered on patients who presented to two level 1 trauma center emergency departments for assault-related injuries. The majority of these patients were women, nearly half of whom had reported intimate partner violence prior to the study. The research, published in Academic Radiology, describes findings that radiologists should be aware of when interpreting studies of individuals who are suspected to have been the victim of domestic violence.

Teens with access to firearms found to be at higher risk for suicide
Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago
Adolescents who had access to firearms had about 1.5 times higher odds for prior suicide attempt and current suicidal ideation, according to a study published in the journal Academic Pediatrics. The study also found that one-third of adolescents coming to the emergency department for any reason had moderate to severe depressive symptoms, and over 40 percent of this group had access to a gun. This data was collected before the pandemic, during which EDs across the country saw an overwhelming increase in mental health burden in youth.

Smacking children: What the research says
The Conversation
The question of whether it is ever acceptable to smack a child – hitting them with the flat inside of the hand with the aim of achieving compliance – is still highly controversial. In England, this controversy was recently reignited by the education secretary, Nadhim Zahawi, who has said that “the discipline of children should be left up to parents”.
Smacking is currently illegal in 63 countries, including Wales and Scotland. In England and Northern Ireland, though, parents remain free to smack their children. Child protection groups and psychologists argue that the decision on whether to ban smacking should be based on what is best for the child rather than the parent. They point to psychological research as a source of information on whether smacking is good or bad for children.

Dutch News
Doctors called to determine the cause of death when someone has died will soon be able to bring in experts from the national forensics institute, NFI, as part of a four-year experiment. The aim is to give doctors more tools to determine how someone died if they have doubts and could lead to more murders being identified, experts say.
