Sexual assault on college campuses continues to make national headlines. We know the victims suffer short- and long-term health problems, such as sexually transmitted infections, depression, anxiety, eating disorders, chronic illness and post-traumatic stress disorder. We also know that college students who have been sexually assaulted are more likely to engage in risky behaviors, such as binge drinking and drug use, and have lowered academic achievement, and they may be at greater risk for revictimization.

Nurses face an array of tough daily challenges on the job.
Twelve-hour shifts are commonplace. Nurses also are caring for more, typically high-acuity, patients with the influx of previously uninsured people who have gained coverage through the Affordable Care Act. Additionally, they are caring for older patients — currently, 6.1 percent of the U.S. population is 75 years old or older, and that will jump to 9.5 percent by 20130, due to the aging of the baby boomer generation, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

Thirty Israeli EMTs, paramedics and doctors recently completed a training course qualifying them as psychotrauma volunteers and teachers for United Hatzalah, a private community-based network of voluntary first-responders across Israel.
The volunteers already started providing psychological first aid before the graduation ceremony on May 25, 2016. They responded to a bus bombing, three cases of sudden heart attack deaths and three incidents of crib death.

U.S. Department of Justice
The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), Office of Justice Programs (OJP), Office for Victims of Crime (OVC) is seeking applications to develop or enhance statewide telemedicine programs to deliver expert Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) guidance and support to medical professionals conducting sexual assault forensic exams in state correctional facilities, institutions of higher education, and rural and tribal communities. This program furthers the Department’s mission by providing 24-hour live access to expert SANEs who will use cutting-edge audiovisual technology to walk a healthcare provider through a forensic medical examination.

In an effort to increase veterans' access to healthcare, the Department of Veterans Affairs is proposing to amend its medical regulations and allow full practice authority for all VA advanced practiced registered nurses, or APRNs. The VA would join a growing number of states that currently allow them to practice independently. Although APRNs have been practicing safely and effectively, they continue to be the target of physician groups as the threat to income is perceived.

Amends the Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Act to prohibit the final approval of any foster care placement or a foster care license from being issued until the tribal social services agency: (1) completes a criminal records check of each covered individual who resides in the household or is employed at the institution in which the foster care placement will be made, and (2) concludes that each of those individuals meets the tribe's standards established pursuant to this Act. Defines a "covered individual" as an adult and any other individual the tribe determines is subject to a criminal records check.
