Mental health response teams yield better outcomes than police in NYC, data shows
NPR
A New York City pilot program that dispatches mental health specialists and paramedics instead of police for certain nonviolent emergency calls has resulted in more people accepting assistance and fewer people sent to the hospital, early data shows.
It's one of a number of programs underway around the country trying to address police violence and systemic racism following George Floyd's murder by providing alternatives to sending law enforcement to respond to emergency calls involving issues such as mental health or drug and alcohol crises.

New York bans child marriage, a practice that's still alarmingly common
Huffington Post
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo on July 22 signed legislation raising the age of consent to be married in the state to 18, effectively banning child marriage.
“Nalia’s Law” was named after a survivor who was forced into marriage at the age of 13. The measure, which goes into effect Aug. 21, builds on a 2017 law that raised the minimum age of consent from 14 to 17.

75% of sexual assault survivors have PTSD one month later
University of Washington School of Medicine via EurekAlert!
Researchers want sexual assault survivors to know that it's normal to feel awful right after the assault, but that many will feel better within three months.
In a meta-analysis published in Trauma, Violence & Abuse, researchers found that 81 percent of sexual assault survivors had significant symptoms of post-traumatic stress one week after the assault. One month afterward - the first point in time that PTSD can be diagnosed - 75 percent of sexual assault survivors met criteria for the disorder. That figure dropped to 54 percent after three months and 41 percent after one year.

Future of Nursing report calls for greater health equity, diversity
Nurse.com
The COVID-19 pandemic exposed serious inequities in the nation’s healthcare system, with front-line healthcare workers often lacking the necessary PPE and other equipment to safely and effectively do their jobs. And the social justice movement that followed the death of George Floyd shined a spotlight on the structural racism that still exists in the workplace and society at large.
In the wake of these many challenges, a new Future of Nursing report by the National Academy of Medicine, entitled, “The Future of Nursing 2020-2030: Charting a Path to Achieve Health Equity,” outlines key issues and goals for the nursing profession over the next 10 years, with a particular focus on reducing healthcare inequities and improving health outcomes.

A tool to help in understanding inaccuracy in eyewitness testimony
University of Toronto via Medical Xpress
Researchers at the University of Toronto have developed an innovative tool to aid in the investigation of how we perceive and remember visual experiences. The new tool, referred to as a "scene wheel," will help researchers study how accurately we construct mental representations of visual experiences for later retrieval—for example, how well an eyewitness recalls details of a crime or accident.
