Liz Louden RN, BN, MSN, SANE -A
Dear IAFN Members;
Learn about IAFN's SANE 365 campaign. The clock is ticking...
Forensic nurses make a difference. You, our members, make a difference.
In keeping with that theme, the most recent edition of Medscape Nursing featured (at the very top of the page!), one of our own, in an article on the profile of forensic nursing. This is part of a series of first-person accounts of what it’s like to be a nurse in a nontraditional role with the goal of providing inspiration to those seeking a new path within nursing. Check it out here.
Additionally, and as many of you are aware, sexual assault care has been all over the news. In an effort to promote SANE, and when there is no SANE, to insure a minimum standard of care, IAFN has designed tools to identify the responsibilities of the health care system when it comes to sexually assaulted and abused patients. We know that right now, patients who have been sexually assaulted, are being turned away from hospitals with no SANE, despite the fact that it is the hospital’s duty to properly care for the patient. With the SANE 365 campaign, you can strengthen your facility’s ability to provide the highest level of care to sexual assault and abuse patients.
The SANE 365 campaign is designed to help develop or strengthen sexual assault medical forensic services in communities that need assistance. Knowing that it can still be a challenge to talk to facility administrators about ways to strengthen support for patients, IAFN created SANE 365 to highlight and support hospitals in understanding their responsibility in the care of patients who have experienced sexual violence. Take a look at the SANE 365 Campaign and please use these resources to your advantage in your community. READ MORE.
You are in luck!

About one in four women and one in seven men in the United States experience intimate partner violence (IPV) in their lifetime, according to a 2015 article published in the journal Science. IPV is a serious and preventable public health problem that affects millions of Americans, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Yet physicians often struggle with how to initiate difficult conversations about this topic and provide proper screening and intervention for IPV.

Behind every sexual assault case is a person whose life has been irrevocably altered. The first responders, law enforcement investigators, forensic nurse examiners, laboratory analysts, victim advocates, and attorneys who support and interact with victims in different ways, have the opportunity to work together to positively impact a victim’s post assault experience and improve healing and recovery.

Texas will now require women to buy additional insurance policies for abortion coverage, a move activists say will have a "huge impact" on women who "need" the medical procedure. Gov. Greg Abbott, a Republican, signed House Bill 214 into law Tuesday, banning Texas insurers from covering abortions in general plans, despite protests from Democrats that the bill should exempt pregnancies from rape or incest and fetuses with fatal medical conditions.

Of all the patient encounters she's had in her 15-year nursing career, few compare with one Miko Nakagawa had in January.
One of the patients she was treating in the emergency department of HealthAlliance Hospital was becoming increasingly aggressive and hostile toward her. When Nakagawa tried to calm the patient down, he pushed her over a nearby stretcher, tearing her rotator cuff.

Sexual assault remains one of the most under-reported crimes in the nation, and that’s despite Department of Justice figures showing someone across the U.S. is sexually assaulted every 98 seconds. On Monday, Gov. Chris Christie took a big step toward mitigating this by signing a bill requiring New Jersey police officers to get sexual violence education training every three years. The executive director for the New Jersey Coalition Against Sexual Assault, Patricia Teffenhart, played a key role in moving this forward.
