This past month has been one of upheaval and uncertainty as the Charlottesville, VA riots took place and now the nation watches as survivors of Hurricane Harvey begin their long recovery process.
I know I speak for the entire membership, Board and staff of the International Association of Forensic Nurses when I reiterate that we stand firmly in solidarity and support of victims of violence everywhere. As forensic nurses, we embrace diversity and inclusion. It is critical if we hope to effectively care for our patients. READ MORE

Certification is for three (3) years and expires on December 31, regardless of the month in which you attained your initial certification. Bayhealth Hospital, Kent Campus Neurosurgery Nurse Navigator Olivia Washinski is a recipient of the DAISY Award for providing nursing care.
The DAISY Award is given by the DAISY Foundation, which was formed in 2000 by the family of J. Patrick Barnes.
Washinski was nominated by her Bayhealth Neurosurgery coworker Rahmia Woodson after an experience with a patient earlier this year. Woodson became concerned with the state of the health of a patient while registering her. When called for assistance, Washinski helped the patient.

Violence against nurses by patients and family members has always existed, but lately it’s been on the rise.
Roberta Young, Vice President of Nursing and Clinical Services at Sanford Fargo, and Tim Vangerud, Safety and Security Director at Sanford Fargo gave their insight to the issue.
“Nationwide, hospitals report violence from patients because of the increase in drug and alcohol abuse,” Young said. She continued to say that this is one of the biggest factors in the hospital environment.

A new facility staffed by nurses trained to treat sexual assault victims will be open this fall.
The Sexual Assault Forensic Examiner (SAFE) program will be housed near DCH Regional Medical Center and will serve sexual assault victims from all West Alabama counties. Services will include medical care, follow-up counseling, specialized therapy and information about reporting options, said Kellee Reinhart, spokeswoman for the partners who established the program.

UCHealth opened the 51-bed Longs Peak Hospital in Longmont, creating hospital competition in a growing part of Boulder County and further growing the Aurora health system’s facilities in communities on the outskirts of the Denver metro area.
The 210,000-square-foot hospital at 1750 E. Ken Pratt Blvd. includes a Level III trauma center, four operating rooms, a birth center, a Level II special-care nursery and an intensive-care unit.
