FORENSIC NURSES UPDATES |
For sexual assault nurse examiners, the Association offers two certifications: the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner — Adult/Adolescent (SANE-A®) and the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner — Pediatric (SANE-P®). Certification as a SANE-A® and/or SANE-P® signifies that a sexual assault nurse examiner has demonstrated the highest standards of forensic nursing practice. To learn more about certifications, click here.
Certification is for three (3) years and expires on Dec. 31, regardless of the month in which you attained your initial certification. For those nurses whose certification expires in 2016, the association sent you a renewal notice earlier this year. If you have any questions about your renewal please contact certification@ForensicNurses.org or call 410-626-7805. Click here to learn about the specific requirements.

The public discussion over how to think about and address sexual violence has heated up in recent years, prompted by high-profile allegations like those against Nate Parker, Woody Allen, and Bill Cosby, as well as increased attention to sexual assault on college campuses. The increased coverage has also brought attention to widespread problems in how sexual assault is investigated.

Sexual assault and sexual abuse are personal and

reported, less than one in five, and even fewer result in a
conviction. The trauma of sexual assault and sexual abuse often leads to severe mental, physical, and economic consequences for the victim.

The State actively devalues a particular section of society by making their harmless consensual conduct a criminal offence. That being said, the truth is that the retention of the ‘buggery law’ in Jamaica is, for most LGBT individuals, a non-issue in their daily lives. Sex between women is not a criminal offence, and most gay men engage in same-sex sexual activity without any police officer stopping them. Symbolic as the law is, the community’s problems are not solved should it be repealed tomorrow.

Lawmakers in California voted unanimously to pass a law imposing a mandatory three-year sentence upon anyone convicted of rape using force.
This bill comes in response to the controversial Stanford rape case. In March of 2016, Brock Turner was convicted of three felony counts of sexual assault and required to serve a six-month sentence. Turner’s sentence was later shortened to three months due to good behavior.

A lawyer for the Department of Education's Office of Civil Rights said it best. At last week's National Sexual Assault Conference, OCR's Rachel Gettler called inconsistent sexual violence data collection by government agencies "a never-ending issue." She added with a chuckle, "We'll see if the government can solve that."
The annual conference at Washington's Wardman Park Marriott spanned three days of meet, greet, and agenda-mapping for victim advocates, experts and policymakers.
