The SANE 365 campaign is designed to help develop or strengthen sexual assault medical forensic services in communities that need assistance. Knowing that it can still be a challenge to talk to facility administrators about ways to strengthen support for patients, IAFN created SANE 365 to highlight and support hospitals in understanding their responsibility in the care of patients who have experienced sexual violence.
Take a look at the SANE 365 Campaign and please use these resources to your advantage in your community.

It all started with a simple question.
Julie Valentine, a BYU nursing professor and certified sexual assault examiner, wondered how many of the sexual assault kits she worked on made it to the crime lab for analysis.
“Nobody knows.”
“There’s no way to track it.”
“There are too many law enforcement agencies.”
The list of excuses given to Valentine went on, and she became determined to find a way to track the submission rates of sexual assault kits, partnering with forensic scientists at the state crime lab to also follow the analysis.

Injury evidence and biological evidence gained from forensic medical examinations of
victims can provide evidence about the crime as well as the means of linking a suspect to the
crime. Evidence from a forensic medical examination can include genital and non-genital
injuries, biological evidence (including sperm or semen, blood, and amylase, an enzyme of
saliva), and a DNA profile that can often be derived from the biological evidence. This DNA can
be matched to a potential suspect, matched to another investigation in the FBI’s Combined DNA
Index System (CODIS), or matched to a convicted offender in CODIS.

The Education Department announced Friday it is formally rescinding Obama-era guidance on how schools should handle sexual assaults under Title IX federal law.
Education Secretary Betsy DeVos announced earlier this month that her department was concerned that previous guidance denied proper due process to those accused.
As part of the interim guidance, the department released a Q&A outlining recommendations on how schools should respond, including guidance on what schools are obligated to do in response to allegations and their flexibility in establishing their own procedures.
