IISD
The UN Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia has released guidance on the costs of domestic violence to a state’s economy and its impact on public health. Such information enables policymakers to identify the systemic loss of a country’s economic potential, and revise budgets to support prevention and protection. SDG target 5.2 calls to “eliminate all forms of violence against all women and girls in the public and private spheres.”

Coronavirus risks 'greatest surge in child marriages in 25 years'
BBC
The coronavirus pandemic could lead to a spike in child marriages globally, reversing 25 years of progress on ending the practice, a charity has warned.
Save the Children said COVID-19 had put 2.5 million more girls at risk of early marriage by 2025.
The pandemic is increasing poverty, forcing girls out of school and into work or marriage, the charity said.
Girls in parts of South Asia, Africa and Latin America are most vulnerable.

Stolen lives: The harrowing story of two girls sold into sexual slavery
National Geographic
Before they were sold to the same brothel, Sayeda and Anjali were typical teenagers, growing up in similar circumstances a few hundred miles apart: Sayeda in the city of Khulna in Bangladesh, and Anjali in Siliguri in West Bengal, India.
They nurtured the aspirations of teenagers everywhere—to get out from under their parents, to find love, to start living out their dreams. Both were naive about the world and couldn’t have imagined the cruelties it had in store.

New study finds self-harm may be socially contagious among adolescents
University of Ottowa
A new study led by University of Ottawa epidemiologist Dr. Ian Colman suggests non-suicidal self-injury—behaviours like cutting oneself without the intent to die—may be contagious among teenagers, who are more likely to harm themselves when they know someone who has.
The study, titled "Adolescents’ knowledge of a peer's non‐suicidal self‐injury and own non‐suicidal self‐injury and suicidality" and published in the peer-reviewed journal Acta Psychiatrica Scandinavica, uses 2014 data collected from over 1,400 Ontario teenagers between the ages of 14-17. Dr. Colman and his team focused on the answers to the question, “Has a friend of yours ever hurt themselves without the intention to die?” A positive response saw the respondent two to three times as likely to answer ‘Yes’ to the question of whether they have thought about, or done, the same.

NIH-funded study suggests link between pediatric hospitalization and rising unemployment
National Institutes of Health
Pediatric hospitalization rates increase when unemployment levels rise, suggests a National Institutes of Health-funded analysis of data from 14 states spanning 12 years. For every 1% increase in unemployment, researchers saw a five percent increase in hospitalizations for substance abuse, a four percent increase for diabetes, a two percent increase for poisoning and burns, and a two percent increase for children with medical complexity — those with a high need for prescriptions, medical equipment or services. Pediatric hospitalization rates for all causes increased by two percent for every one percent increase in unemployment.

Augmented reality offers a promise of incision-free autopsies
The Wall Street Journal
A medical examiner puts on a pair of augmented-reality goggles and brings up a computer simulated image of a body that appears to hover steps away. Nearby on a metal autopsy table lies the body of a person brought into the lab after a fatal shooting. Instead of cutting into the victim, the examiner slices through the 3D image, mapping the bullet’s trajectory and determining the cause of death without making a single incision.

Study reveals element in blood is part of human — and hibernating squirrel — stress response
Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center via Medical Xpress
A new study published in the journal Critical Care Explorations shows for the first time that part of the stress response in people and animals involves increasing the levels of a naturally circulating element in blood.
The discovery demonstrates a biological mechanism that rapidly responds to severe physiologic stress and potentially serves to protect us from further damage due to life-threatening conditions.
