October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and the Women’s Leadership Project began with an event to highlight red flags that could lead to abuse in relationships.
The Silent No More Walk took approximately a dozen students — all female — around the quad where posters offered scenarios that highlighted behaviors such as stalking and victim-blaming. Small red flags lined the sidewalks near Fort Hays State University’s Memorial Union, and larger flags were tied around trees in the quad.

The Joplin Police Department's latest impact report shows that overall crime is down, but there are concerns. Specifically, sexual assault cases have risen sharply.
In all of 2016, the JPD handled 26 sexual assault cases. Already in 2017, they've taken on 44 cases. That's a 69% increase.
Joplin police say they are aware of the increase and are committed to dedicating resources to the problem.

The National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey (NISVS) is an ongoing survey that collects the most current and comprehensive national- and state-level data on intimate partner violence, sexual violence and stalking victimization in the United States. CDC developed NISVS to collect data on these important public health problems and enhance violence prevention efforts.

Those who talked to a healthcare professional about intimate partner violence were four times more likely to use an intervention. Health care professionals are in a unique position to help victims of domestic violence and that starts with speaking out about domestic violence, but that’s not always an easy task. A woman lost her arm in a horrific boating accident on Lake Travis Saturday. Now she's thanking the strangers who helped save her life.
Every second together is a blessing for Kristina DeJesus and her husband Blas Barquin. Just 72 hours ago, DeJesus nearly lost her life on Lake Travis. She was at a bachelorette party when a boat propeller severed her right arm. She remembers hearing her best friend scream, "Her arm is floating in the water!"
