Last week, 24-year-old Amanda Nguyen changed the way the government handles sexual assault and rape.
On Friday, President Obama signed the Sexual Assault Survivor Bill of Rights — also known as H.R. 5578 — into law.
The bill received bipartisan support, passing unanimously through both the Senate and the House of Representatives. The bill was written and championed by Nguyen — a rape survivor — and the advocacy organization she created, Rise.

Former President Asif Ali Zardari has lauded Parliament for consensus legislation that closes the loopholes of forgiveness in murders in the name of honour on the one hand and stops rapists from walking away with impunity on the other.
“Friday Oct. 7 will be remembered as a ground breaking day when the anti-honour killing and anti rape bills were passed in the joint session of Parliament,” he said in a statement.

As a result of Melissa’s Law, passed six months ago, several hundred rape kits have now been tested that were sitting in the state of Oregon’s storage. The state passed a law to test the backlog of untested rape kits and to speed up the amount of time allowed for new tests. The state of Oregon has sent hundreds of kits to Utah for testing, but thousands remain untested despite over 30 DNA matches so far.

Cleveland Rape Crisis Center has been awarded a grant of $3,101,184.59 through the Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) program administered by the Ohio Attorney General’s Office, Crime Victim Services Division, and a second grant through the Ohio Attorney General’s Office from the State Victim Assistance Act (SVAA) of $12,684.00, for a total of $3,113,868.59.
