Circles of impunity: Why sexual violence by humanitarians and peacekeepers keeps happening
The Conversation
Mukesh Kapila writes, "I first visited the North Kivu region of the Democratic Republic of Congo in 1994 during the genocide in neighboring Rwanda. In Goma’s emergency hospital, I witnessed rows and rows of rape survivors who had fled across the border.
A quarter-century later, it is hurting again in the same place, for the same reason: sexual violence. But what is different is that the alleged perpetrators are humanitarians, sent to save the community from a deadly Ebola outbreak. The humanitarian workers are said to have demanded sexual favors from women and girls trying to make a few dollars from low-level work in international agencies."

Study discovers unique brain signature of intimate partner aggression
Virginia Commonwealth University via Medical Xpress
Why do people hurt the ones they claim to love? That question has driven researchers to discover much about the psychological and sociological predictors and consequences of intimate partner aggression. But an understanding of the neurobiological causes—or what happens in the brain—remains incomplete.
A new study led by Virginia Commonwealth University researchers used functional magnetic resonance imaging to examine the brain activity of 51 male-female romantic couples as they experienced intimate partner aggression in real time.

State spending on poverty reduces child abuse, foster care placements, deaths
UPI
When states spend money on programs that reduce poverty, fewer children are abused and neglected, fewer end up in foster care and fewer die, a new study reveals.
Researchers found that for every additional $1,000 that states spent on federal, state and local benefit programs per person living in poverty, there was a four percent reduction in substantiated child abuse, a two percent reduction in foster care placements and about an eight percent reduction in fatalities.

Addressing gender identity biases in electronic health record systems
Yale School of Medicine
Sexual orientation and gender identity data collection policies are often put into place in healthcare settings without sufficient knowledge about meeting the needs of transgender patients, according to Clair Kronk, PhD, postdoctoral fellow in medical informatics. To address common biases in electronic health records systems, transgender researchers from institutions across the United States and Canada came together with Kronk as lead author to publish a paper in the Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association. The authors outlined their recommendations for improving EHR data representation in a way that improves transgender patients’ experience as well as gender-diverse research.

Developing a training program on safeguarding children with disabilities
Nursing Times
Children and young people with disabilities and additional needs are more vulnerable to abuse but less likely to be identified and appropriately safeguarded than those who do not have a disability. There is emerging evidence that the pandemic has heightened this risk due to a lack of access to safe spaces, such as schools or nurseries, and trusted professionals. This article discusses the development of a 2018 training program on safeguarding for this group that has since been updated to reflect the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
