Treating Violent Behavior as a Contagious Disease. Presented by Charles Ransford, MPP, Director of Science and Policy, Cure Violence University of Illinois at Chicago, IL.
Our language and actions increasingly reflect our recognition that violence is a public health issue (e.g., “crime waves,” “the epidemic of violence,” “hot spot policing,” and “Cure Violence” health-based approaches). Yet most communities lack a health-based response to violence, and most health workers are untrained in detecting and treating violence and violence-related trauma. This followup session to the keynote speech delves deeper into addressing violence as a healthcare issue.
Each year, the International Association of Forensic Nurses seeks to identify and recognize those individuals who have contributed significantly to the advancement of forensic nursing and to the growth and success of IAFN. Learn More.
This morning we honored the 2015 recipients:
Virginia A. Lynch Pioneer Award: Stacey Mitchell

Vision Award: Winston Sayson and Carey Goryl
Distinguished Fellow Award: Pamela Tabor

Ann Burgess Research Award: Patricia Speck

Patron Award: David Bernard
These individuals were selected through a rigorous application process that included a written essay and documented active participation in the Association. Please help us in congratulating them: (Pictured left to right) Sinegugu Duma, South Africa, Michelle Gorman, Scotland, Hope Miller, USA.
The New Street Corner — Online Advertisements of Sex Trafficking Presented by Brad Dennis, KlaasKIDS Foundation, Search Center for Missing & Trafficked Children Pensacola, FL
This workshop will take attendees “behind closed doors” and reveal what happens to children caught in the web of commercial sexual exploitation. Child pornography and prostitution are growing epidemics in our country, leaving thousands of victimized and traumatized children in their wake. Behind Closed Doors will expose the recruiting and grooming habits of these predators, explain the physical and psychological trauma these children encounter, and provide tips for identifying and engaging these victims.
Between now and Friday at 2:30 p.m. in the Exhibit Hall, the Foundation is sponsoring the Silent Auction. Be sure to check it out and bid. All donations go to giving more scholarships! We are once again providing “I donated” name badge ribbons for one dollar each. Our goal this year is $700, or one from each person. You can get them at the registration desk or from any of the Foundation Board members. Remember, just a little ends up going a long way!
