Dear Colleagues,
Thanksgiving is a time of togetherness. It is a season of giving, sharing and spending time with those who are near and dear to us. It is that time of year when we look back on all our blessings and honor those who have blessed our lives in significant ways. I know many of you have to work this holiday, including myself, and we will not be home to celebrate with our family. Thank you for working on Thanksgiving and caring for patients of trauma. New York City is safer than it has been in decades ― that is, unless you are a victim of domestic violence. While it has seen its homicide rate halved over the past 15 years, murders involving family members and romantic partners have barely budged, NYPD statistics show.
Now, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio wants to change that. On Friday, he is set to announce the creation of a task force charged with developing an ambitious, citywide plan to tackle domestic violence.

Turkey's Government has come under fire for proposing an 'amnesty for rape' law that would allow men accused of sexually abusing girls to avoid punishment if they marry their victims.
The proposal, put forward by the ruling AK Party, would allow sentencing in cases of sexual abuse committed 'without force, threat or trick' before November 16 to be indefinitely postponed if the perpetrator marries the victim.

The Centers of Disease Control and Prevention recently released Sexual Violence on Campus: Strategies for Prevention. This tool offers an overview of how to approach sexual violence prevention on college campuses with real-world examples from the field.
As part of the White House Task Force to Protect Students from Sexual Assault, the CDC was tasked with identifying promising practices to prevent sexual violence on college and university campuses.

Sexual victimization is not included in a prison sentence, and it should not be part of the punishment. States bear legal responsibility under the Constitution and federal law for protecting prisoners in its facilities from sexual violence and other serious harm. The packet contains resources to support counselors, advocates, preventionists, technical assistance providers, and allied professionals committed to affirming all individuals and communities. A UK-based charity has warned that British tourists and expats in Dubai and across the United Arab Emirates (UAE) should not report incidents of rape after a woman who was allegedly gang raped was arrested and charged with “extramarital sex”.
Detained in Dubai, an organisation that assists people who have become victims of injustice in the UAE, has warned against reporting rape or other crimes in the country because of the “manipulation when it comes to criminal accusations” and the “racist” preconceptions held against Western tourists.
