We are excited to announce that Carolyn R. Smith, PhD, RN from University of Cincinnati was awarded the 2016 Forensic Nursing Research Grant. Her research is titled Technology-Based Health Behavior Intervention with At- Risk Teens in Shelters: A Pilot Study.

“Centers for Disease Control and Prevention 2015 Human Papillomavirus Vaccine Recommendations for Sexually Assaulted Patients: A Review and Update” by Meredith Scannell has been selected as the CE article.

These courses are offered FREE to registered nurses, advanced practice nurses, physicians, and physician assistants who have already completed a 40 hour Sexual Assault Examiner classroom course and are caring for American Indian/Alaska Native patients in the USA.
During this two day, hands-on clinical skills training, participants will develop and enhance their clinical practice skills through simulated patient experiences using live models.

One out of every six American women has experienced a sexual assault or an attempted sexual assault or rape in her lifetime, according to the National Institute of Justice and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. While more than half of female survivors of rape report symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), previous research has found that not all survivors respond to traditional treatments for PTSD, causing their symptoms to resurface over time.

More than a quarter of women in the Canadian military have been sexually assaulted during their careers, according to a survey by the government’s statistical agency.
The survey, conducted by Statistics Canada and released on Monday, was commissioned by the armed forces and followed a scathing 2015 report that found that the culture of the military was “hostile to women and L.G.T.B.Q. members and conducive to more serious incidents” involving sexual harassment and assault.
