I would like to extend my warmest wishes for a wonderful holiday season. As my term as your President draws to a close, I would like to take this opportunity to especially thank Jennifer Pierce-Weeks who created a smooth and orderly transition as interim CEO of the IAFN this past year. With the busy holiday season is upon us, many will be enjoying time off from work so they can visit with family. However, while holiday cheer is spreading, nurses and healthcare providers will continue to march along caring for those who are sick and in need of care. Many nurses will work through breaks to provide care to those vulnerable patients in need. Although the idea of skipping a meal break is unheard of in most professions, it sadly is more the norm than not in nursing.

One of the fundamental ways scientists measure the well-being of a nation is tracking the rate at which its citizens die and how long they can be expected to live.
So the news out of the federal government is disturbing: The overall U.S. death rate has increased for the first time in a decade, according to an analysis of the latest data. And that led to a drop in overall life expectancy for the first time since 1993, particularly among people younger than 65.

Authorities are creating the nation's first database of unidentified bodies, revealing there are 500 sets of human remains currently languishing in morgues and laboratories.
The computer database has been created by the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission in conjunction with the Australian Federal Police (AFP).
AFP victim-based crime coordinator Marina Simoncini said the remains, some only a fragment of bone, were found scattered across Australia before being investigated by state and territory police.

Deaths due to heart problems tend to be highest in counties along the southern half of the Mississippi River.
Violent deaths tend to be common in Western counties, and deaths from mental and substance abuse disorders tend to be more common in Kentucky and West Virginia counties than others. Those are just a few of the trends that emerged in a new study that revealed the major causes of death for counties across the United States.

The U.S. Navy is testing the effectiveness of a smartphone app in an attempt to curb military sexual assaults.
The app, LiveSafe, is designed to “help sailors with prevention by providing a one-stop shop for all of their needs,” Navy Capt. Charles Marks said in a press release. Marks said the app includes a temporary location-sharing feature, as well as information on emergency services and support centers.

The purpose of this project, the national Survey of Teen Relationships and Intimate Violence (STRiV), was to
build the field’s understanding of adolescent dating relationships, particularly those marked by adolescent
relationship abuse (ARA). While definitions vary across the literature, for the purposes of this study we define ARA as
physical, emotional, verbal, psychological, or sexual abuse perpetrated by an adolescent against another adolescent
with whom they are in a dating/romantic relationship. The situational venue may be in person or via electronic
means, in both public and private spaces, between current or past dating partners.

The Daily Pennsylvanian
A new bill in California could require transfer students to include any history of sexual assault on their transcripts, Inside Higher Ed reported.
California congresswoman Jackie Speier proposed the bill, entitled the Safe Transfer Act. According to Speier, the bill will ensure that institutions are making safe additions to their campuses.
