The Las Vegas Design Center (LVDC) had a goal – they wanted to figure out how they can improve with assisting designers with their projects and increase foot traffic. In the past, designers have had to go all over the valley to complete a project, viewing sample after sample. That takes a lot of time, and the Las Vegas Design Center set out to create a solution. Wouldn’t it be nice to have all resources together in one room? IDS members and designers Cary Vogel and Lance Robins, from Interiors by Cary Vogel, were part of the solution.

I actually wanted to become an architect first. When I was a child, instead of building random sets and things with Lego’s, I built houses and structures. In middle school I began taking hand drafting classes and continued this into high school. This is when I started working on my own floor plans and elevations. I began at Lawrence Technological University with a major in architecture, but at the end of my first year, I declared myself a dual major with Interior Architecture & Design. I dropped architecture at the end of my third year and focused solely on Interior Architecture & Design. The rest is history!

If you’re an interior design professional, only one person will prevent you from setting and getting much higher fees and markups in the year ahead. That person isn't a competitor, critic, or customer. That person is you. You're the one who will convince yourself that you can't charge more. You're the one who will tell yourself that clients would never pay more for your design services. And that your local market won't "bear" higher fees. And that you simply don't have the experience or expertise to substantially raise your fees. That's baloney.

Now that we’re a couple of weeks into 2019, we’re beginning to see some interior design trends emerging on the horizon. To be fair, quite a lot of them are being carried over from last year, such as industrial accents and natural fibers like wicker and woven grass. That said, there are quite a few interesting design elements making a comeback.

According to the latest Zillow Home Trend Forecast, a modern aesthetic with clean and simple industrial materials will be the interior design trend of 2019. Modern glass, metal, and raw materials will replace reclaimed wood. To keep the overall look of metals and concrete from feeling too harsh, homeowners are opting for "warm modernism," by adding warmth with elements like natural wall coverings, wooden furniture, and handmade, earthy accent details.

Millennials who demand that workplaces be almost extensions of their social lives are driving massive changes to the design of offices, the amenities they routinely offer, and their atmosphere.
Especially popular are spaces that copy cafes or hotel lobbies, fully equipped kitchens where proper meals can be cooked from scratch, lots of social areas and club-like facilities to enable workers to go straight out after work.
