I am an IDS Interior Designer in Dallas, Texas, and I would like to invite you to be a part of the new book I'm writing about, Good Clean Design. I'm asking designers that I believe would be a good fit to demonstrate good clean design to our clients and the general consumer. There is so much that is posted on social media, in print, and on design websites such as Houzz, Pinterest and Instagram that is not good design. This book will hopefully help our clients and the consumer better understand what good clean design really is from the perspective of a designer, using the spaces you have designed as prime examples.
Read his letter here and the book proposal here.

I think I've wanted to be a designer my entire life! I used to rearrange my room constantly when I was a kid. Once my parents let me pick out new bedding, and it took me weeks to find what I had in my head. I think I was 10 years old, but when the time came to pick a career, I was told that design was just a hobby, not a career, so I went a different direction. Clearly, I was destined for design, because here I am!

The existing drapery in this grand living space was dated and did not take full advantage of the vertical space; instead, they constricted the natural light and distracted from the view. The new drapery spans nearly 35 feet and draws the eye upward to accentuate the stunning visual height of this living space. Custom tassels and LED lights add drama to this incredible drapery installation.

The client wanted to convert a guest room into a nursery for the baby they planned to adopt. The couple wanted a baby, no matter the gender, so the designer made this space gender-neutral with a color palette of blues, gold and greens.

How do we want to live? That's the question that has driven designers and architects for as long as human beings have been building and customizing their dwellings. A timely new exhibition called "Home Stories: 100 Years, 20 Visionary Interiors," opening Feb. 8 at the Vitra Design Museum in Weil am Rhein, Germany, provides a fascinating look at how designers have tried to answer this question over the past century.

When referring to the term "upcycling," many people recall images of poorly executed DIY projects, a roughly painted chest of drawers or an old glass bottle that has been repurposed into candle. While all of these have a place and play a part in the shift towards a circular economy, there is a new wave of fashion-forward designers, across a variety of industries, who are showing us how a statement, design-led aesthetic can be achieved through upcycling.

There's a playfulness to polka dots that often makes them a favorite for fashion. While they are whimsical, they can also add an air of sophistication to an interior when iterated subtly.
Whether you go bold or basic, follow the advice from the design pros to hit the sweet spot(s).

Designers of hotel spaces have traditionally tended to favor either theatrical flair (baroque finishes and opulent flourishes), or the opposite: a low-key insouciance consisting of neutral, contemporary furniture and acres of beige-ness.
That's changing. Now, many designers are looking to the cities and neighborhoods where hotels are located for decorating inspiration.

Harper Martin's house is small, stylish and aggressively on trend. The gray roof tiles perfectly complement the stone detailing that arches around her pink front door, and fairy lights are strung from the trees on her front deck. Inside, the attention to detail continues — a lush green wreath sits above her stone fireplace, and a matte black pendant lampshade hangs from her kitchen ceiling.

This project was an Edwardian house on the Hampshire/Surrey border. The clients were a lovely couple who had met later in life and wanted an original, atmospheric family home in this classic setting for their new life together. They were married in the garden soon after the interiors were completed.
The design principles are in the colors — varying tones of the same color on a backdrop of neutrals — from layering textures and simple, high-quality furniture. It is minimal but comfortable.

Early in the new year is a natural time to think about refreshing the look of your home, and in 2020, "cozy" and "warm" are trending keywords for interior design, according to experts, with luxurious textiles, inviting color palettes and warm mixed metals found across all design styles.
While a maximalism approach is on the horizon, clean and modern design schemes continue to reign.

The 50 States Project is a yearlong series of candid conversations with interior designers we admire, state by state. Though the series is a celebration of American designers, this particular conversation happened across the pond: Over lunch at Le Pré aux Clercs during Paris Déco Off, we caught up Chris Goddard, who founded his Fayetteville, Arkansas–based firm in 1992 after his first-ever project was published in Architectural Digest.
