But Birmingham, Mich.-based interior designer Michelle Mio says that more of her female clients are staking out a room or nook in their home just for them. No husbands, kids or sticky fingers allowed. Whether they are used for sewing, scrapbooking or just paying bills, the rooms women want are typically private, pretty and functional, Mio says.

New app enables virtual placement of furniture

"Furnish," an app that allows its users to walk into a room and place furniture around the room virtually, took top honors at the first Evansville Startup Weekend competition, held at the University of Southern Indiana College of Business. The augmented reality app for iPhone and android devices is targeted to interior designers and furniture companies, and was developed by a team that includes Michael Patzer, a 2009 graduate of the USI College of Business and owner of Orange Group Apps, Andrew Heil of Ariens Co., and Andy Markle of Auto Trader Monthly magazine.
