Architecture and fashion are big inspirations for my design work, as well as nature. One plays off of the others. A blank canvas is just that, whether it is an outfit, a room or the outside of a building. The outfit must be finished with accessories like shoes, a handbag and jewelry. The room within a home is finished with fine furnishings of pillows, throws, lighting and drapery. Finally, a building is finished by beautiful landscape that is to scale. Great design is all in the details.

The new drapery spans nearly 35 feet and draws the eye upward to accentuate the stunning visual height of this living space. Custom tassels and LED lights add drama to this incredible drapery installation.

You don't get a second chance to make a great first impression. Everybody knows that. So why do so many people consign their homes' foyers to afterthought status?
According to a recent National Association of Home Builders survey, entry foyers fill an average of 83 square feet, or about 3% of an average new home's floor space. While tiny, that space can be critical in creating the aforementioned terrific first impression.

This week's edition of House Calls takes us to Asheville, North Carolina, where architect Ross Smith and his wife Anna Welton created a contemporary home with '70s flair.
The couple's ever-growing collection of houseplants — many of which Welton purchased from greenhouse sales at Warren Wilson College, where she works as a program director — thrive in the home's sunny atrium. The greenery, in fact, helped shape the verdant interior palette.

Sometimes the second act requires a set change. In the case of a Reston couple seeking to re-vitalize the home they had occupied for 30 years, agenda-busy lives had come to a pause.
The kids were now in senior high school and college — mostly living at home. The lower-level family entertainment area, meanwhile, belonged to a bygone era. The master suite was, likewise, an anachronism.
