Designing for Collaborative Consumers

If you're young and mobile — and likely strapped for cash — you don't want to be bogged down by a lot of stuff. In today's sharing economy just about anything can be rented, borrowed or bartered at a fraction of the cost to buy or the price charged by a commercial service. This collaborative consumption poses some interesting challenges for designers, not the least of which is: Is it a viable business model? Traditionally, designers are hired to perform custom work. They are masters of consumption; they know which products are the best and how to get them. But designers also are experienced collaborators.
Sectional Sofas: Legos You Can Sit On

Unlike ordinary sofas, sectionals have a special ability. "They make a space within a space, always," Adam Rolston said. "They're the most architectural of interior furnishings." Rolston, 51, runs an architecture and design firm called Incorporated with Drew Stuart and Gabriel Benroth, and the three often use sectionals as a way of creating a smaller seating area within a larger space.
