New research suggests that what makes workplaces work well is finding the appropriate synergy between the occupants and the environment. According to Gensler's U.S. Workplace Survey 2019, what people want most from their workplace is a great experience. What makes for a great experience, Gensler's researchers found, are not lots of extracurricular amenities and hip socializing spaces but a flexible environment that supports the various ways employees need to work.

A stark, dark style of home design is trending for both the interior and exterior of houses in Southern California. More homeowners are choosing to paint their houses black, the Los Angeles Times reported. Since 2017, the design firm Benjamin Moore Paints has seen almost a 30% jump in the usage of black for interior and exterior, their experts say.

Textile designer Elizabeth Whelan wants interior designers to know that fabric should not be overlooked when it comes to products, especially ergonomic chairs.
"There's no reason why we can't have really high standards for the fabrics on ergonomic chairs — they don't need to be just toppings," she says. "I know there are price point considerations, but you can still design well. I think we can have beautiful colors and interesting patterns, and it can feel good."
