April Member Spotlight: Catasha Singleton
When did you realize that you wanted to become an interior designer?
This moment was fully realized when I narrowed down what makes me absolutely happy, even if I did it for free. Without any formal training, I decorated for several years at my own expense, because I believed there was no way I could make a living from it. I only yearned for more knowledge of the design trade. After several points of feedback, I realized it was an innate ability, inspired by my mother who kept her home beautiful and fresh.

2018-2019 Designer of the Year Award: Entry way/foyer
Winner: Barbara Owens, Owens Interiors at Home, Texas
The European architecture forms the structure of this soaring formal 28-foot entry. A double, free-floating staircase with a bespoke hand forged iron railing frames the entry. The custom railing and marble treads centers around the elegant White Thasso flooring with a black marble inlay.

What really makes you unique as a designer: How the coronavirus helped me figure this out!
Written by Lindsey Murillo of Lindsey Murillo Interiors
I recently underwent a re-brand in my organization. I entered into the interiors industry as a home stager and when I went full service interior design, it was time to make a change. The choice to re-brand was one that I waited nearly two years to make. I wanted to be sure the new brand and image I was creating for myself was perfect.

2018-2019 Designer of the Year: Closets
Winner: Chris McKenry, Closets by McKenry, Tennessee
While designing the stunningly organized master closet, the home owners needs were considered, as well as the craftsman style of the home. The footprint of the master bath and closet was flipped for this remodel, giving a larger bath where two small closets once were, and the new master was expanded into a large 175 square-foot room where the bath was located.

Setting up your home office for success
Our current working life has seen a change over the past week. Our kitchens have now become our break room, our living rooms are now our conference room and our webcams have now become our normal way of seeing people. It's a totally new and different routine than what we are used to! Having a home office space set up can help to set you up for success. We have reached out to some designers who excel in home office design for some advice on how to set up your work from home space for productivity, normalcy and, of course, comfort. Here is what they had to say.

Melody Smith: A tiny home indoor, outdoor paradise
Furniture, Lighting & Decor
This "tiny" home, built in Jupiter, Florida, is the epitome of an indoor/outdoor residence, and was designed for a client who had lots of input on this home's design, says Melody Smith of Melody Smith Interiors in West Palm Beach, Florida.
Completed earlier this year, the home started out as a rundown hoarder's shack, but the owner had a vision and the property had potential, with a mix of wetlands and higher ground, mature trees, and a country setting that is within 10 minutes of any amenity you could possibly want or need.

Fashion-forward woman injects runway style into new decor
Houston Chronicle
The room at the front of Peggy and David Matthews' Southside Place home has been used for many things in the past 20 years — where children played and teens flopped for, well, whatever it is that teens do, and even for the family's Christmas tree and gifts.
Through the years, one child or another has claimed the room as a hideout or hangout, but after a design makeover, courtesy of Marie Flanigan Interiors, Peggy Matthews now calls it her own.

Showing off: Designers make their mark with showhomes
Furniture, Lighting & Decor
"Stretching your creativity." "Great marketing opportunity." "Collaborating with other designers." "Cementing relationships with suppliers." "Giving back to the community." These are some of the benefits interior designers share from their showhome endeavors, a process that requires vetting, a significant investment of time and often money, and the fortitude to design a room or rooms in a home — sometimes with parameters, sometimes not — only to tear it all down weeks after its completed and pictures are taken, putting everything back the way it was.
