Design Inspiration from Painter Frida Kahlo's Home

Frida Kahlo's father built La Casa Azul (the Blue House) in 1904 in Coyoacán — then a small village but since subsumed by Mexico City's sprawl. It's a blocky two-story structure enclosing a central courtyard in the colonial style. Kahlo was born there in 1907, moved out when she married fellow artist Diego Rivera in 1929, returned with him in 1940, and stayed until her death 14 years later.

A vacation destination dating from the time of the Civil War, the lake and the nearby town of Lake Geneva have enticed baronial Chicagoans ever since the steel, lumber, and cattle industries minted major fortunes in the city.
