Tasteful Building: Can Great Design Impact All 5 Senses?
Each of our five senses – sight, sound, touch, smell and taste – plays a key role in how we experience the world. When it comes to the design of buildings, architects are increasingly designing with all of these senses in mind. The impact of sight, sound, touch and even smell are obvious enough, but taste? Maybe thinking of our sense of taste when it comes to buildings is not so crazy.

A Neutral-But-Not-Bland Summer Home Renovation
The Wall Street Journal
Before moving from their native England to New York City, in 2003, Harriet Maxwell Macdonald and Andrew Corrie had overhauled a series of apartments—nine, in fact, starting in 1993. By the time they settled in Manhattan’s Soho neighborhood, they had fully defined their look: a modern sophistication crossed with a warm, enveloping sensuality. When the first of their three children arrived five years later, their simple, clean palette didn’t need much adjusting.

Most Clients Don't Know Baloney About Their Budgets
Asking clients for their interior design "budget" wastes their time – and yours. Budget questions limit their thinking — and your income. It’s not just that most clients don't know their budget for design. They don't even have a clue. That’s why it makes absolutely no sense to ask clients up front what they want or expect or plan on spending for new home furnishings, a kitchen and bath remodel, etc.

Getting to Know HENRY — Possibly Your Next Best Client
By Michael J. Berens
Who is HENRY? HENRY stands for "High-Earners Not Rich Yet" — the group often also referred to as affluent adults. The term was first used in a 2003 Fortune magazine article to describe a segment of U.S. households with high incomes but little accumulated wealth. Lately, HENRYs have caught the attention of the luxury market. HENRYs are on a trajectory to becoming ultra-affluent or wealthy and thus long-term customers of luxury goods and services. As an interior designer, you should get to know HENRY.

A Family-Friendly Home Keeps Its 1930s Charm
This Los Angeles house lured in its current homeowners from the curb. Both hail from New England and fell in love with the mature trees around the house before they even stepped inside. The 1930s architecture called to them as well. "I knew with two small kids we'd never be able to keep up a pristine modern look," says homeowner Holly Kretschmar, who was attracted to the vintage home's style. The architecture reminded both of them of the beachy, relaxed feeling of houses they'd stayed in on Cape Cod, Massachusetts, when they were growing up.
