Interior Design Society announces Designer of the Year Award Recipients
 On Saturday, May 20th, 2017 members and guests of the Interior Design
Society (IDS) gathered in Scottsdale, Arizona to honor the winners of the 2016 Designer of the Year competition.
The awards were presented by international award-winning host, Donna Drake.
“The Designer of the Year competition demonstrates our commitment to recognize the outstanding work of our
members nationwide” shared Jenny Cano, Executive Director, IDS. “This year we received a record number of
entries, our award-winners consider it a prestigious honor.”
Award recipients were selected by an expert panel of judges that included: Mark Bruntez, Patti Carpenter, Susan
Dickenson, Dann Foley, Susan Inglis, Nick May, Jaye Anna Mize, Farah Merhi and Jennifer Wagner Schmidt.

Susan Ribnick designs "crystal chandelier" bra for Art Bra Austin fundraiser
A long
time supporter of Art Bra Austin, this year her life experiences led her to partner with fellow breast
cancer survivors, and artists, Dianne and Monica to create a shining fashion statement covered in
glass tile mosaics from Oceanside Glasstile and antique crystals from Crystal Renaissance Fine

Trade Affiliations and Why They Matter

What do you do when the going gets tough? Where do you find strength, creativity and stamina when you feel like you’re running on empty? As an interior designer working in New York City, I’ve been thinking a lot about my answers to these questions of late, and I keep coming back to the groups I belong to – the colleagues and friends that have emerged from them, and the amazing work I see from the companies I do business with. No one gets involved in creative endeavors like interior design because it’s the “easiest path to make a living.” We do it out of love. Out of passion. Because we want to share our gifts by creating beauty in our living spaces and enriching the lives of our clients.
Business by Accident or by Design?
Some designers love goal setting and thrive on reaching lofty standards. They bask in the glow of their creative and financial accomplishments.
While other designers have great difficulty and hold many fears around making a commitment to their business and personal success.
They want to make an impact, they want to share their creativity with the world, but they struggle with the fear of failure.

Vanity Tops
Designer and New York Chapter President, Julie Schuster, keeps active in the design community. One of her functions is serving as Brand Ambassador for Robern Bath Cabinets and Vanities. Her recent contributions were featured in the company's new "Vanity Tops" brochure, released for KBIS 2017 in Orlando, Florida.
Olamar Interiors is the grand-prize winner from the Sustainable Furnishings Interiors Design Contest
On Oct. 21, SFC celebrated 10 years of serving the furnishings community.
The organization's second decade started in the same space where it all began in the fall of 2006. The celebratory review, MC'ed by Libby Langdon, included exciting announcements, stirring speeches, and a great party on the top floor of the Union Square Building.

Nicole Arnold Interiors Honored by American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) Texas at Annual 2016 Legacy of Design Awards
Nicole Arnold Interiors garnered two awards in the residential category: Bathroom (under $30,000), 2nd Place, and Bathroom ($30,000-$50,000), 2nd Place.
This has been a stellar year to-date for Nicole Arnold Interiors. In addition to the ASID Texas Legacy awards, the firm received the 2016 ASID, Dallas Design Community’s “Design Ovation” project award. Arnold also garnered leadership and project awards from The Interior Design Society (IDS) and was selected as one of the top 20 best interior designers by Freshome, a noted online magazine that focuses on interior design and architecture. Most recently, the firm placed 2nd in the 2016 Addison Reader’s Choice Awards for Best Interior Designer.

Molloy Students Overhaul Chairs for 'Chairity'
Students from the IDS Molloy Student Chapter have volunteered their services
in the design of the dining room at the Edna Moran Family Shelter at the INN.
The Mary Brennan INN of Long Island is a non-profit organization that provides
food, shelter and long-term housing as well as support services to people who
seek help and has a dedicated staff and volunteers.
In order to raise money, the students had a "Chairity" fundraiser May 10. They took discarded chairs, re-purposed them and auctioned them off at the event. There were 20 chairs, and there were also baskets donated for the raffle. It was a very successful event, raising $6800.

Information on CEU change for IDS Associate members
As of January 1, 2017, IDS Associate members must earn a minimum of 0.4 (4 hours) approved continuing education units (CEU) each year. Please make note of the following helpful information regarding CEUs and CEU filing to maintain your Associatel level membership in IDS.
IDS bylaws and policies require Professional and Associate members to meet the continuing education requirement. The IDS continuing education requirement is separate from any mandated continuing education requirement in your local jurisdiction. Check with your state regulatory board for requirements.
Filing CEUs
IDS members must utilize the Interior Design Continuing Education Council (IDCEC) registry to file CEUs. Each IDS member must create a free account through IDCEC. Once you have created your IDCEC account, you will receive a unique IDCEC number to login into the IDCEC website (your IDCEC number is different than your IDS member number). The IDCEC user registry allows you to upload and track your continuing education activity as well as store a record for you under your account. Check your IDCEC account regularly to ensure your records are up-to-date. At the end of each CEU cycle, you will be required to submit your IDCEC report to the IDS National office to verify that you have fulfilled your CEU requirement.
Special Circumstances
IDS may grant an adjustment to the requirement for individuals experiencing poor health, certified by a physician; a specific physical or mental disability, certified by an appropriate health care professional; extended duty with the armed forces; or for extreme hardship, which, in the board’s judgment, makes it impossible for the member to comply. Requests for an adjustment to the continuing education requirement must be made at least two months (by October 30) prior to the end of the current reporting period.
Noncompliance
At the end of a reporting period, members who have failed to meet the CEU requirements will be subject to a non-compliance fee ($10 per CEU). Any member who fails to comply with the continuing education requirement, including payment of the noncompliance fee, may be subject to devaluation of Professional membership.
