Yankee Class
ELLE Decor
For most city dwellers, having a weekend house traditionally meant getting away from it all — perhaps to a place near the water, or somewhere nestled in the piney woods. But then came the overdevelopment of many formerly bucolic enclaves, and its ugly twin: the unbearable drudgery of weekend traffic. For one New York-based couple, the three-hour haul from their townhouse on the Upper East Side to the Hamptons each Friday evening became too stressful. So they went where few weekenders had gone before: to Greenwich, Connecticut, the ultimate suburb for city commuters.

Textiles, Reborn: Green Trend
The use of recycled and recyclable textiles in the design industry is a trend that’s great for the environment, but the increasing availability of these materials is also providing designers a way to experiment with new textures and tactile qualities. In rugs, upholstery, and even lighting, green fabrics are inspiring new collections that are both sustainable and stylish.

Boost Your Email Open Rate With Strong Subject Line
Intuit Small Business Blog
If you rely on email to market your business (and, honestly, who doesn’t these days?), here's what you're up against: The average email user receives more than 70 messages per day, according to technology market research firm Radicati Group. In other words, people's in-boxes are overflowing with messages, and it's all too easy for them to hit Delete to clear the clutter.

Lamps in Kitchens
Things That Inspire
Lamps make a kitchen look and feel so much more like a decorated room. I'm not sure if the deep window space was part of the original house, or if architect Stan Dixon created it during the renovation, but it is certainly the perfect place for a pair of lamps.

A Glamorous and Historic New Orleans Cottage
Architectural Digest
When Peter Rogers was born in Hattiesburg, Miss., family lore has it that he did not burst forth with the wail of an ordinary infant. Instead, he opened his mouth and screamed, "New York!" In his mid-20s he finally made it there, eventually landing a job at Trahey/Caldwell, an influential Manhattan advertising agency that helped define the Mad Men era — and where, after taking over the firm and renaming it Peter Rogers Associates, he devised some of the most memorable slogans of the 20th century, among them Vidal Sassoon's "If you don't look good, we don’t look good".

Noguchi Lamp Designs Inspired by Japanese Paper Lanterns Still Light Up Modern Home Decor
The Associated Press via The Washington Post
A familiar item in contemporary interior design — the round, white, paper light shades often sold at Ikea for $5. These affordable lanterns are knockoffs of light sculptures created by the renowned artist Isamu Noguchi in the early 1950s. The Noguchi lamps — called akari, the Japanese word for light — were inspired by traditional Japanese lanterns used in ancestor worship. Over the decades, the akari became classics of mid-20th century modern home decor.

Building a Better Pinterest Through Data
"Big Data" is as much a terrifying term as it is a ubiquitous part of daily life. It wasn't always so, however. Until we developed and learned how to use technology that could process and finesse massive amounts of data, we lived in the dark. And once we could gather that data, we needed more and more people to interpret it.

In the Air | Delft Touch
T Magazine
While a new generation of artists and designers are coming up with modern ways to reinterpret the classic combination of blue and white at the same time, its antique porcelain predecessor is hitting record highs at auction. Whether it is Valentino's oversize florals, influenced by Delftware, on strict puritan-collared dresses, or Rem Koolhaas's Casa da Música in Porto, Portugal, with abutting panels of traditional azulejos, the trend is unmistakable. The cobalt compound that gives blue-and-white porcelain its color was brought to China from Iran by Mongolian invaders in the 13th century.
