The Interior Design Society (IDS) announced Anna Mavrakis, past president of IDS, as the recipient of its Fellowship Award at the ceremony concluding IDS National Conference on Friday, April 1. Becoming an IDS Fellow is the highest honor that can be awarded to a member and is only bestowed every few years when there is a member worthy of such an honor. Achieving the distinction of IDS Fellowship recognizes individual interior designers for outstanding accomplishments in their profession and for providing a significant contribution to IDS. The award was presented to Mavrakis by IDS National President, Jan Cregier.

When Darren Schaeffer put his Beverly Hills home on the market, he kept his Cabo San Lucas-inspired furniture in vivid purples and greens and continued to display his personal photos. He didn't give a thought to home staging. "I had plenty of furniture. Why would I move my furniture out just to move new furniture in again?" said Schaeffer. But after the home was months on the market without any offers, his agent called in a professional home stager, whose goal is to help a home — not the homeowner — look its best.

Establishing a budget can be one of the trickier negotiations when working with a new client. More often than not, the client will not have a fixed figure in mind. They probably have a sense of what they feel they can afford but may be uncertain as to what things cost or how much they are willing to spend for a particular item or result. You, on the other hand, can’t design in a vacuum. You don’t want to lose the client by under delivering or over delivering on their expectations.

Beach decor is unmistakable, with its ocean-blue hues and seashell flourishes. Coastal style, on the other hand, is far from universal. The bamboo-lined rooms of a Palm Beach bedroom contrast sharply with the Moorish influences of a San Francisco home, for instance, while the practicality of Northeast coastal towns is as distinguishable as French influences in Charleston. Across the United States, seaside style is as different as the cities you find it in.
