Trade magazine invites IDS members to breakfast
Home Accents Today is hosting a breakfast for interior designers at the summer Atlanta Market, Thursday morning, July 14 at the Capital City Club (7 John Portman Blvd., across the street from the main entrance of Americasmart Building 1).
IDS members who plan to be in Atlanta that day are invited to the event, which begins with a buffet breakfast at 8:30 a.m. and will be followed by an interactive discussion moderated by the magazine’s editor in chief, Jenny Heinzen York.
The discussion will range from product trends and market shopping lists, to vendor issues and general business topics. The breakfast, which is free of charge to attendees, will be photographed and reported on in the pages of Home Accents Today.
"Most of the retailers and designers who have attended our market breakfasts in the past have enjoyed the discussion, and our editorial staff always looks forward to having an opportunity to socialize with old friends and new,” said Susan Dickenson, Home Accents Today’s retail editor. "We’ve been hosting these at the Atlanta and High Point markets for several years now and have found them to be informative for us, the attendees and the industry at large."
Seating is reserved and space is limited, so anyone interested in attending the Atlanta breakfast is asked to email Dickenson as soon as possible at sdickenson@homeaccentstoday.com.
Home Accents Today, celebrating 30 years in 2016, is part of the Progressive Business Media family, which also includes Furniture Today, Home & Textiles Today, HFN, Casual Living, and Gifts & Decorative Accessories.

Jeff Lewis of the reality show "Flipping Out" runs a Los Angeles design business. He has a line of paints bearing his name that sells online through Home Depot, and he's creative director of Living Spaces furniture, working on catalog shoots and with the buying team. A strong believer in owning a home, he bought his first at 18 with $7,500 down and seller financing. Fifteen years ago, armed with a pre-law degree from Chapman University and experience working with a mortgage broker, an appraiser and two real estate agents, he began flipping houses.

"I just love it!" is a common expression that reveals a lot about the psychology of selling. Something about a product or offering sparks an emotional reaction in us that influences our buying decision. By connecting with that emotion you can tell which products or services a client is likely to buy and provide them with the information they need to feel assured they are making the right purchase.

Sustainability is a word that is used a lot these days. Our built environment is constantly being evaluated for how sustainable it is. Architects and interior designers who practice sustainability will tell you it isn't about the placard on the wall, the number of LEED points they can get or how many LEED platinum buildings they design. They do it because it is ethically the right thing to do. We need to make sustainable design the standard for modern architecture, interior design and construction.

Even with the greatest of care you are bound to encounter a few glitches, missing parts, dings and scratches during your final installation. Like a stain on a new garment, they can detract from all your hard work and spoil your client’s enthusiasm for their new space. Don’t leave your project partially unfinished. You owe it to your client to give them a hundred percent.

Take the poll at the end to weigh in on your favorite one.

You've been in a white, spa-like bathroom time and time again. Don't get us wrong: It's lovely. But it's not your only option for a bathroom that feels like a luxury getaway. The black bathroom is a dramatic dive into slightly masculine, yet decidedly elegant, design. "Everybody likes a crisp white, spa-like bathroom, but not every bathroom has to be a spa," says interior designer Susan Ferrier of McAlpine House, whose has incorporated black bathroom design into her past projects. "Black bathrooms are so dramatic, which means you're emotionally moved. You don't have that drama in an all-white bathroom."
