Trade magazine invites IDS members to breakfast
Home Accents Today is hosting a breakfast for interior designers at the summer Atlanta Market, Thursday morning, July 14 at the Capital City Club (7 John Portman Blvd., across the street from the main entrance of Americasmart Building 1).
IDS members who plan to be in Atlanta that day are invited to the event, which begins with a buffet breakfast at 8:30 a.m. and will be followed by an interactive discussion moderated by the magazine’s editor in chief, Jenny Heinzen York.
The discussion will range from product trends and market shopping lists, to vendor issues and general business topics. The breakfast, which is free of charge to attendees, will be photographed and reported on in the pages of Home Accents Today.
"Most of the retailers and designers who have attended our market breakfasts in the past have enjoyed the discussion, and our editorial staff always looks forward to having an opportunity to socialize with old friends and new,” said Susan Dickenson, Home Accents Today’s retail editor. "We’ve been hosting these at the Atlanta and High Point markets for several years now and have found them to be informative for us, the attendees and the industry at large."
Seating is reserved and space is limited, so anyone interested in attending the Atlanta breakfast is asked to email Dickenson as soon as possible at sdickenson@homeaccentstoday.com.
Home Accents Today, celebrating 30 years in 2016, is part of the Progressive Business Media family, which also includes Furniture Today, Home & Textiles Today, HFN, Casual Living, and Gifts & Decorative Accessories.

In working with clients, interior designers get used to taking on another role: mediator. Decorator Erinn Valencich, founder and president of Los Angeles – based Erinn V. Design Group, is often faced with the challenge of melding a family’s opposing design viewpoints — perhaps one person prefers a glam vibe while another is obsessed with rustic interiors. Luckily, she’s a master at showing her clients how to bridge styles through color choices, textiles, furniture silhouettes, and finishes. Here, she shares her tips and tricks for creating a home that marries the best of very different aesthetics.

We give lots of thought to decorating rooms but often overlook the staircase, despite the fact that in many homes it's the first thing people see when they walk in the door.
Staircase areas can be "a great spot to introduce your personal style," says Brian Patrick Flynn, who designed HGTV's "Dream Home 2016," the design network's annual house giveaway.

HGTV, which rolled out in 1994, turned these home makeover shows into a full-service lifestyle network. HGTV and sister network DIY, which is focused more on the nitty-gritty details of home repair, are seeing record ratings right now, according to Scripps Network, the channels' parent company. Leading the charge is Fixer Upper, which follows ridiculously charming married hosts Chip and Joanna Gaines as they help couples find "the worst house in the best neighborhoods" of Waco, Texas, and then perform the renovations. The whole thing is topped off with my favorite part: Joanna adding her country-chic home decor finishing touches.

Homeowners are pulling out the stops on home renovation. Increased confidence in the economy, rising home prices, a shortage of affordable housing, and a desire to stay put are combining to create near-record levels of renovation and remodeling activity. For new home buyers and those who plan to remain in their current home, kitchen and bathroom renovation projects top the list. Conditions have rarely been better than now for remodelers and interior designers.

Small Business Trends
Banks are the largest lenders for small businesses across the United States. But getting a traditional bank loan for a small business is often a huge challenge. About 72 percent of small businesses that apply in fact get rejected. That’s because traditional banks require businesses to meet several criteria to secure financing.

A wide array of building materials is now available in a faux form, many indistinguishable from the real deal. What looks like antique barn wood is actually polyurethane. Cedar siding may actually be a composite of wood fibers and resin. Porcelain tile looks like hardwood flooring. Even rare granite countertops and boxwood hedges have imitators.
