Team Works
Metropolis    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
If anyone has found a silver lining in the recession, which has decimated the design profession, it may be the newest class of interior designers. The downturn in new construction seen in major urban centers has fueled an upsurge in renovation and consolidation. And the young founders of Internet start-ups, bars, and restaurants — industries that run as much on optimism as they do on credit — turn increasingly to contemporaries, independents like themselves who can channel unsketched visions into tangible forms inexpensively and on time. Romantic Bedrooms
Architectural Digest    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Say the name Mario Buatta and the image that comes to most people's minds is a cheerful Anglophile living room dressed in colorful chintzes. But the New York City interior designer should probably be just as famous for his luxurious bedrooms, which are equally dazzling and prized for their come-hither comfort. More

Is Your Business Falling Into a Creativity Gap?
American Express OPEN Forum    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Are you and your employees suffering from a "creativity gap?" If you feel that way, you’re not alone. The State of Create global benchmark study from Adobe found that while Americans overwhelmingly believe creativity is the key to economic growth (85 percent), 82 percent of us think the nation is falling short of its creative potential. Wallpaper Illusions: New Designs That Fool The Eye
Los Angeles Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
It's a modern riff on trompe l'oeil: wallpaper with photographic realism. If you like the rustic warmth of stacked firewood or the industrial grit of concrete block, you can simply paste it onto the wall. We've rounded up some of the latest designs — floor-to-ceiling illusions from Deborah Bowness, Andrew Martin, Studiomold and more. More

Sound Thinking: Athena and Victor Calderone's Amagansett Home
Elle Decor    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
When Athena and Victor Calderone first saw the beach house in Amagansett, N.Y., that would eventually become their weekend retreat, it was love at first sight — but not for the reasons you might expect. "There were big bulbs of black mold hanging from the ceiling," says Victor, a house-music DJ and producer who has remixed songs by Madonna, Sting, Beyoncé, and others. "The roof was leaking in a number of places, and had almost collapsed near the fireplace." More

This Way to the Beach
The Wall Steet Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Beach Boy Dennis Wilson may have once said that "on the beach, you can live in bliss," but getting anywhere near one in summer requires an act of will—not to mention an increasingly fat pocketbook. In France alone, beachfront property has risen in value by more than 30 to 40 times in the 50 years to 2005, according to data from the French land department. In Asia, where a new burgeoning middle class is emulating European and American habits, beach-side property is rapidly disappearing into the hands of developers. For many, this means foregoing the beach, pulling a staycation and getting the "look" instead. The beach house is no longer just aspirational; it's a design movement. More

Old Storybook 'Treehouse' Gets a Modern Makeover
Los Angles Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Frank Beddor bought what had been listed as a "gentleman's hunting lodge" designed by architect Robert Byrd in 1950. Nearly obscured by trees on a two-acre hillside just a few blocks above Hollywood Boulevard, the rustic structure had a steep-pitched roof and weathered redwood siding. It looked straight out of a storybook and reminded Beddor, bestselling novelist of the young-adult trilogy "The Looking Glass Wars," of summers spent in the woods of Minnesota. More

Decorating, and Enjoying, a Screened Porch
The Washington Post    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
As temperatures break records and our bodies break into sweats, we seek shelter indoors, where we're protected from bugs and heat. But even on the hottest July day, we should not disregard the porch. Screened porches offer an experience that cannot be found elsewhere. They are the meeting point between home and garden, offering exposure to the elements with the protection and comfort of being indoors. In other words, the best of both worlds. More

Modern Meets Eclectic For Delicious Dining Rooms
Houzz    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
These 10 dining rooms contrast starkly with traditional, cushy dining areas that have matching upholstered chairs and obvious color schemes. They're a bit wild (in an understated way), a little mix and match, and totally relaxed and comfortable. Every one of them is made for lingering over meals and great conversation. Please pass the wine. More

How Online Marketing Can Fuel Offline Conversations
Mashable    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The fact is no medium drives offline conversation better than online marketing. But how do you see offline impacts — like word-of-mouth benefits — in a click-rate report? Use these five techniques to make your marketing work online and offline. More
