In case you haven't noticed, there's been a revival of all things 1970s lately — lighting by Venini, photography by Willy Rizzo, furniture by Pierre Cardin and Guy de Rougemont. Fashion has been dipping into the disco era for quite some time, and last year Sirius XM launched Studio 54 Radio, a 24/7 extravaganza channeling the throbbing beat that defined that hedonistic decade. Even Dallas, the seminal late-70s drama, has been reincarnated for a new generation. Still, there are limits to this period craze.

Floral Fabric: Nothing Chintzy About It
The Wall Street Journal

Editors always have their eyes peeled for a gestating trend. Nipping at the heels of the industrial-steam-punk look is a cheeky dose of upscale 1980s flounce. Call it Minimal Opulence. Think decorator-y details like couture curtains or fringed sofas grabbing attention in otherwise spare interiors. At the movement's core lies the romantic re-awakening of a sleeping giant: chintz.

When Robert Couturier began designing the interior of an apartment in a midtown Manhattan, N.Y., skyscraper, his client expressed one primary desire. "She wanted something ultra-contemporary, because she had done everything else," Couturier says. The Polish businessman's wife had previously overseen the design of a number of the family's other homes in Europe. "They have incredibly beautiful houses," says Couturier. "They have one in Warsaw, another by a lake in the Polish countryside, a place in Geneva, a place in Sardinia, and a boat. Each reflects a different side of her personality."

Go Wild When Decorating for Kids
The Associated Press via East Valley Tribune

Kids are often enthralled with the wild kingdom, so it's fun to do their rooms with animal-themed decor. And you can think beyond the standard, kitty-cat wall border or dino bedding; some of today's designs have a sophistication that will please style-minded parents, too. In her heyday as the bejeweled empress of New York philanthropy, Brooke Astor entertained presidents, first ladies and a potpourri of pooh-bahs and literati at her elegant 14-room duplex on Park Avenue. And when she died on Aug. 13, 2007, at Holly Hill, her estate in Westchester County, N.Y., at 105, she left behind two households’ worth of cherished possessions, including Qing dynasty lacquer furniture, a jade-and-diamond Cartier clock and dozens of 19th-century dog portraits.
